Based upon my tutoring experiences - I tend to ask the student where they are confused about course material. Most students will answer with "I don't know" or "none of it makes sense." In the maths and sciences, calculus and chemistry especially, there is always an easier problem to be uncovered within the harder one. As a tutor I will start by guiding them to break down the problem into sub steps and have them complete the steps one by one. By breaking down the problem into steps I can see whether they do not know how to begin or whether their understanding becomes cloudy near the middle. Also, breaking down the problem into easier steps is a stress relief for the student as they may come to recognize they do actually know how to go about aspects of certain problems. It is helpful to provide context to the problems as well so you are not just computing without thinking about "why am I computing this?," "how does it help my understanding in the class?," and even more generally "why should I care?" Once the problem area is targeted, more problems/examples can be completed to strengthen skills to eventually be able to move on to more complex problems.
