About Alfie

Alfie is the sole employee of Intentional Football: a private football coaching service that personalises training to the players' needs.

Alfie has connections to academy scouts and has assisted three players to be scouted for trials, had one signed and worked with three academy players. Alfie also has helped multiple players sign for Roehampton Elite and various other  local grassroots clubs.

Alfie also works with adult beginners and has assisted many to playing consistently at a recreational/social level.

Alfie holds 18 years of competitive playing experience, 10 years of coaching experience (FA Level 1, Introduction to Futsal, Safeguarding and Enhanced DBS certified), and is the Founder/Head Coach of Intentional Football.

In his youth, Alfie represented Old Actionians, Brentford FC, Old Isleworthians, CB Hounslow, Bedfont Sports, and Brentford FC (Futsal), as well as training with Brentford FC and Chelsea FC’s development programmes (feeders to the academy).

As an adult, Alfie spent three years competing in the US at different collegiate programs. He was a captain at Cayuga Community College, where he was selected as the coach’s player of the year, and made both the MSAC Conference Team of the Year and the Region’s All-Tournament Team. He most recently competed at NCAA D2 institution UT-Tyler.

Whilst still a student-athlete in the US, Alfie would use his time off to build Intentional Football. Alfie recognised the importance that individual training, both alone and with private coaches, had played in his football and character development. Solitude and time spent with a revered individual created a “big picture” approach to his game and social interactions that he still uses to find solutions today.

In 2022, after moving back to the UK, Alfie made Intentional Football public. His aim: to be the coach he always desired to have had as a curious, young mind; patiently teaching the importance of high-quality decision-making through football.

  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started playing competitively at 6 years old. Playing at U7s level was the earliest opportunity. Before then, I was introduced to the sport by my parents and started learning as soon as I could walk. I became obsessed and played at holiday camps, birthday parties, in my garden - wherever I could find playing opportunities, I would participate.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

Football I still practice at a high level, but am unable to compete in due to my concussion history. I now use sport as a way to exercise and pass on my knowledge to enthusiastic individuals who could benefit from my knowledge. I developed a late appreciation for basketball, but also cannot compete. I aim to resume playing tennis in the near future. I played briefly in my youth and its singular focus fascinates me. Particularly as it offers me the opportunity to compete despite my concussion history.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

The life lessons that it imparts. No matter how well we learn a skill, we will never be certain of the outcome of its attempts. We must have faith. Whether we are learning the skill for the first time or can perform it well 9/10: we must believe whilst accepting that we have no certainty for the result of what we're about to attempt. All we can do is practice to build up the necessary subconscious jigsaw of foundational skills that will make us proficient participants of our chosen activity. This has served me well in challenges outside of sport. This is precisely sport's beauty. I see the competitive element as a necessary evil. The real beauty is the fortitude and faith provided by the journey of learning a sport.
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

Transforming my mindset at 20 years old. I was entering my second year back home in the UK after returning from a disappointing first year in the US. I was obsessed with returning and earning a scholarship to a good university. My coach at my UK university, Teng Deng, gave me the guidance I needed to achieve what I set out to do. I was delusional of my weaknesses and strengths and blamed external factors for my lack of success. I knew this was an issue but didn't know the path to letting go of this attitude. Teng assisted with free 1-2-1 sessions, which prioritised mental guidance as well as the physical and technical elements of football. The foundation he provided allowed me to graduate from Community College and earn academic and athletic scholarships at a NCAA D2 University. I knew my mindset had been dramatically shifted due to the external achievements I earned, but also due to the respect I received, that I previously lacked, from teammates. This foundation is now serving me in coaching.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

None of my achievements as a child served me. I did the bare minimum to stick around good teams that brought me external success. This caught up with me at 18, as explained in my answer to question 4. My achievements from 20 onwards are those that transformed me as a sportsperson. Moving to another country and earning scholarships (which I needed to attend university) made me determined, resilient, patient and extremely caring.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

I would go with Andrea Pirlo, but he hates running (read his autobiography, it's fascinating). Instead, I would choose Sergio Busquets. The trend in positions is because I was a less athletic centre midfielder. I would ask him if he remembers how he developed his play style and particularly what influenced it (internal solutions or other players). I would also ask how he grew up and now lives outside of football, and how his lifestyle influences his style of play.
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

The focus is always on the individual. Particularly in team sports, we are often robbed of this necessity. We are taught to do what's best for others and the team. But what if your team doesn't trust you, won't give you the ball, and demands it off you the instant you receive it? What if you copy more advanced players who have played longer than you? The best players are the best because they compete with themselves. They develop strengths unique to them. Allowing your teammates to rob you of that development and trying to copy another person's traits are the worst things you can do as a player. With this in mind, I guide my clients to take the path least travelled and develop their own identity within football. I remain patient yet firm with my clients as it is a highly frustrating path, but it will always remain the most rewarding. Particularly as it is a transferable skill.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

I do what I encourage my students to do. I follow my own path. That means delivering what I consider important and what is commonly overlooked in the football world: caring mental guidance in addition to meticulously planned out sessions that efficiently develop physical and technical aspects of a client's game as they travel down the path least followed.
