About Anna

I have always been interested in the world, other cultures and why people believe what they believe! This led me to take GCSE RS, followed by A Level Philosophy and Ethics and then on to my degree in Religious Studies.

After taking a gap year where I travelled and volunteered I completed my PGCE in secondary RS and settled in London.

I taught Religious Studies and Philosophy and Ethics for more than 6 years. I was Head of Department in two different high schools and I loved helping students to achieve their potential.

I have taught GCSE and AS and A2 courses very succesfully and students have recieved excellent exam results. I feel confident breaking down complex themes to help students understand them and apply them in a real life context.

I have a genuine passion for my subject and I love helping students formulate their ideas and express them with clarity and compassion.

I'm patient, open and create classes that suit my student's needs and what they need to focus on to do well.

I think classes should involve a range of activities such as reading, multi media and games, so that students use what they learn in context and can remember key ideas, as well as practicing exam questions.

I have experience with Edexcel and OCR GCSE and A Level OCR and AQA with a focus on Islam and Christianity.

At A Level I have more experience with the OCR specification but I am happy to take on students studying with other exam boards.

I work closely in line with the syllabus and ensure students receive feedback on their written tasks by following the mark scheme.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Since I was a child I've always had big questions about why we are here, if God exists and why people behave the way they do. That natural led to an interest in Religious Studies at school, A Level Philosophy and Ethics and my degree in Religious Studies too. Private tutoring is a great way to help students on areas they find more tricky and allow them some one to one guidance to help them succeed.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I've always enjoyed the ethics side of GCSE and A Level teaching the most as it involves critical thinking and real-life issues. I'm also very keen on belief and practice and the role religion plays in day to day like. Meta Ethics is often a challenging topic for students along with epistemology (on the AQA) specification, but I like to help students figure it out step by step.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My RS teacher at school was Ms Walker and she definitely played a part in me becoming a teacher and always encouraged us to share our opinions and really think in an open-minded way.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    Enthusiasm, knowledge, patience and fun.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have found that using images to remember ethical theories works well with students. With one class when I first started teaching we used to have timed competitions to see who could match the parts of the image to the key themes from the ethical thinkers.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Sometimes trying to explain complex philosophical ideas can be very hard work! Philosophy and Ethics is a challenging A Level and trying to come up with ways of explaining it clearly can be difficult at times.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for equality and understanding. Through RS and Philosophy and Ethics I think we can become better thinkers, more open and help others to understand the world a little better.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I genuinely care about my students and the progress they make.
