About Mitchell
We all struggle. I have a doctorate and 3 masters… not really because “I’m so smart.” Nah. I just keep at things longer than most people. Like a dog with a bone. I get excited by puzzles and problem solving (how best to slide down a hill uses math, physics and outside the box thinking!). I have backgrounds in Epidemiology, Biostats and Political Methods. I also have taken over a dozen grad level stats/methods classes. They help me figure out life hacks and how to talk to new people.
I taught at Tulane U, Colorado State and U of Florida. That made me realize that the best students are the ones who simply try. Some get it right the first time, but my favorite students are the ones that preserve… ask for resources… go to tutoring when they need it… the ones who practice and ask for help… exactly like you are doing now!
I was in special Ed for 5 years, and continued to struggle with some writing in college, but I kept going to tutoring. Aka writing centers. I ended up winning a number of writing awards against other PhDs and PhD students. Some things really just take a second or third try… PS- you can call me Mitch

I incorporate real life examples, and creative “what if” scenarios to help students engage with course content. I think the best way of learning is by doing, so I give students the opportunity to try and retry. I like to give students the tools that they need (the basics of the lesson) and then we learn as a collaborative/iterative process. This instills an understanding that any attempt teaches us something and we should keep trying (and asking for help if necessary) until we come to the right solution.
I was taught lacrosse and baseball as a kid (and I still ref lacrosse). If you fall or miss the ball, you don’t quit playing. You get back up and try again, and that’s exactly what got me my PhD, MPH and MPA from U of Florida, Tulane University and Texas State.
Learning is a part of life. I want them to know the course content and do well in classes as a way of preparing them for anything life (or stats) throws at them!
