About Peter

I am a highly experienced ICT and Business teacher with 15 years of teaching expertise across both schools and colleges. At 36 years old, I have delivered a wide range of qualifications, including OCR Technicals, HNC, BTEC Nationals, GCSEs, OCR Nationals, Pearson and AQA GCSEs, A-levels, OCR iMedia, and even higher-level foundation degree programmes.

My passion for teaching is driven by building strong, positive relationships with each of my students, which I believe is key to their success. In addition to ICT and Business, I have taught modules in Business and Geography. Recently, I authored my first textbook for a BTEC GCSE qualification and contributed to writing specifications for OCR qualifications.

As a tutor, I work with a variety of students, offering both regular sessions and targeted one-offs. I particularly thrive in supporting students after mock exams, where the opportunity to make noticeable progress ahead of final exams is especially rewarding.

Outside of teaching, I am actively involved in my local community, coaching an under-16s football team in Worcestershire. In my free time, I enjoy reading about sports and nutrition, combining my personal interests with my commitment to lifelong learning.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Business and Computing during the covid pandemic and online teaching throughout this. As for private tutoring, I became interested in it when I realised the impact personalised instruction can have on students' learning experiences. Witnessing the transformative effect of one-on-one tutoring sessions, where I could tailor my approach to each student's unique needs and learning style, motivated me to pursue this avenue further. I found immense fulfilment in guiding students through their learning journey and witnessing their growth and achievements firsthand
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I genuinely enjoy all aspects of Business. There is a great range of topics from the creativity of marketing through to the calculations of the finances. All require different skills that I like to teach my students, whilst also looking at the possible exam questions or coursework assignments they may face.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, I've been fortunate to have several inspiring teachers throughout my academic journey. One teacher, in particular, stands out as a significant role model for me. Their passion for teaching and dedication to their students were truly admirable. They not only imparted knowledge but also instilled in me a love for learning and a belief in my own abilities. This teacher went above and beyond to ensure that every student felt supported and encouraged to reach their full potential. Their enthusiasm for the subject matter was contagious, and it motivated me to delve deeper into the topics we were studying. Their mentorship not only influenced my academic pursuits but also shaped my approach to teaching and mentoring others. I strive to emulate their commitment to excellence and their unwavering belief in the power of education to transform lives.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Subject expertise: A good tutor should have a strong grasp of the subject matter they are teaching. They need to be knowledgeable and well-prepared to explain concepts clearly and effectively.

Patience: Patience is crucial when working with students who may struggle to understand certain concepts. A good tutor remains calm and supportive, providing encouragement and guidance as needed.

Adaptability: Every student learns differently, so a good tutor should be able to adapt their teaching style to suit the individual needs and learning preferences of each student. This also includes me creating different resources based on the student need.

Communication skills: Clear and effective communication is key to successful tutoring. A good tutor should be able to explain complex ideas in a way that is easy for students to understand, and they should also be attentive listeners who can respond to students' questions and concerns. It also great to keep up to date with progress through the variety of messaging channels, whether this is the superprof platform or via email at regular points.

Empathy: Understanding and empathy are essential for building rapport with students and creating a supportive learning environment. A good tutor shows empathy towards students' struggles and is committed to helping them succeed.

Motivational skills: A good tutor inspires and motivates their students to reach their full potential. They celebrate students' achievements and provide positive reinforcement to keep them engaged and motivated. Students are sometimes a little reluctant to have a tutor so motivation is key to improve grades.

Flexibility: Flexibility is important for accommodating students' schedules and adapting to unexpected changes or challenges that may arise during tutoring sessions.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

During my high school years, I had a particularly challenging time grasping calculus concepts. Despite putting in hours of studying and seeking help from my teacher, I still struggled to understand certain topics. Feeling frustrated and discouraged, I considered giving up on the subject altogether.

However, everything changed when a fellow classmate offered to tutor me outside of school hours. Their patience, clarity in explanations, and ability to relate complex calculus concepts to real-life examples completely transformed my understanding of the subject. Through their guidance and encouragement, I not only improved my grades but also developed a newfound confidence in my ability to conquer academic challenges.

This experience taught me the immense value of peer-to-peer learning and the impact that a supportive and knowledgeable tutor can have on a student's academic journey. It also inspired me to pay it forward by helping others who may be struggling with similar challenges in their studies
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I don't currently have any difficulties or challenges with this subject.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I'm passionate about business and own my own tutoring company. It's great to put all of the theory into place!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

Easy to get along with and interested in students as individuals. I enjoy getting to know students interests as well as getting to know them academically.
