I adhere to some general teaching guidelines, but I don't have a rigid methodology. Each student's needs differ based on available resources, time, prior knowledge, and objectives. Therefore, I maintain flexibility and establish a tailored approach with each student during our initial meeting or call. Typically, I request the material at least two days before the session to review and identify key areas of focus. I then create comprehensive notes and formula sheets, which I share with the student for easy reference. When materials are available, I solve exercises and review them with the student. Over the years, I have amassed a substantial collection of exercises and solutions for various courses, enhancing the learning experience.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I think it was during high school that I first realized that I liked Economics, as it was the only class in which I was actually paying attention! I wasn't a particularly strong student in high school but for some reason, I had the highest grade in the Economics class. Now when it comes to private tutoring, I was introduced to it by a friend and just thought of giving it a try. I am still here and I am enjoying it so much!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Economics, Finance, and Accounting modules, and also help students with interview preparation. The best part, however, is when the discussion begins from concepts of Economics and moves into the real world, the world economy, and global markets. I always enjoy discussing with students about what's happening in the world in terms of economics, how the markets are moving, and how these market events fit into what we learn at university. I have to admit that more often than not, I am positively surprised with students' knowledge of currents events and their commercial awareness.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My elementary school teacher, Mr. George, would be that person. He was that kind of teacher who would play football with us during breaks, but also teach us in an effective and entertaining way. He also really believed in us, always telling us that we shouldn't worry, take our time and that things will turn out just fine. We still see him every now and then and it's always a special occasion. Because of that, I also try to be as supportive as possible when tutoring and go the extra mile in order to make sure the student understands what we talk about.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe that the most important thing is to make sure that the tutor and student feel comfortable talking to each other and interacting in general. Things shouldn't feel too formal or awkward. The two, tutor and student, should be like two friends who can freely talk to each other, agree on some stuff, disagree on some other, but with both ultimately having in mind that they are on the same team.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One day, during my bachelor studies, what started as me explaining the lecture material to two of my university mates in an empty auditorium late in the afternoon, ended up being an (almost fully-fledged) lecture given by me to 15 of my university mates in that auditorium. It was an unforgettable experience that made me realize that I may be good at explaining stuff.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

When it comes to advanced econometrics, I still struggle sometimes to understand what some of the research papers are doing in terms of methodologies and models used, and the results at which they arrive. What's even more challenging, is explaining the material to students who are new to statistics and econometrics. It really requires some creativity (and patience :p)!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

To be honest I cannot really say that there is something I am 100% passionate about right now. I am, however, trying to be involved in things that I enjoy, and teaching/tutoring on Superprof is one of them.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I think what makes me a Superprof is the fact that I do not consider myself an expert in what I teach, but simply as a person with some intermediate to advanced level of understanding, and who wants to learn even more. And, by teaching and explaining, and through interacting with students, I always get a new perspective, learn something new and further expand my knowledge on the topic. As the quote goes: "In learning, you will teach, and in teaching, you will learn".
