About Francesca

I’m a native Italian speaker with near-native fluency in English, and I’ve been teaching languages for over seven years. I hold a Master’s degree in Modern Languages from the University of Strathclyde and have extensive experience working both one-on-one and with small to medium-sized groups. My teaching spans a wide range of learners, from adult learners to young children. I am PVG certified and well-versed in creating age-appropriate, engaging lessons for students from Primary 1 through to Advanced Highers.

My teaching approach is entirely student-centered, shaped by each learner’s unique needs, goals, and pace. I believe that language learning is a deeply personal journey, so I strive to create a supportive, adaptive environment that evolves with the student. Whenever possible, I use an immersive method — encouraging consistent use of the target language to build natural fluency and confidence. That said, for exam-focused lessons, I shift the emphasis toward structure and precision, making grammar and targeted practice the foundation. Flexibility, encouragement, and a touch of creativity are at the heart of every session.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Italian fluently because it’s the language of my childhood — I was born and raised in Italy. English, on the other hand, became part of my life thanks to nearly a decade living in Glasgow, Scotland. It's where I studied, somehow turned into an adult and made lifelong connections. I still proudly carry a bit of a Scottish lilt in my accent — and more than a little love for that beautiful, rain-soaked city where I left a piece of my heart.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

That’s such a tough question — Italy’s culture is so broad and colourful, it’s hard to pick just one! But I’d say Roberto Murolo, the Neapolitan singer-songwriter, captures something truly unique. His voice and melodies feel like home to me. If I could turn Italy into music, it'd definitely sound like his songs.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I adore the word “ciotola” — it somehow sounds soft and comforting. I'll leave you to look it up, although you might probably think this is such a random answer! I also love how expressive Italian is, not only in words but in gestures. We speak with our hands, our eyes, our hearts. It’s a language of connection. And the tradition of gathering for meals — no matter how simple — is something I treasure deeply. It’s about slowing down, being present, and sharing life with others.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Italian isn’t just a language for me, it’s the soul of who I am. It’s the way I think, feel, and express the deepest parts of myself. Teaching it feels like more than just a job; it’s a way of passing on a living culture, a heritage. Every word carries layers of history, humour, and humanity. Helping someone else fall in love with it feels incredibly rewarding.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Grammar, without a doubt, is one of the biggest hurdles: it can be tricky, irregular, and full of exceptions. But I believe in making it approachable and even enjoyable. We laugh through the confusion, we practise without fear, and little by little, it clicks. A bit of banter and a lot of encouragement go a long way.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

As a student, I was always scribbling lyrics on my notebooks, books — anywhere, really. Music was my secret weapon for learning English. I once aced an English test, and I’m pretty sure it had something to do with the Beatles lyrics on my pencil case. My teacher kept humming it during the lesson... I like to think Paul McCartney helped me get that grade!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Moving to Scotland was life-changing for my English. Glaswegian accent is no joke — it pushed me to really listen and adapt. But more than that, the people were endlessly kind, patient, and generous with their words. They never made me feel less for not being perfect, making me feel like at home when I asked "how" instead of "why" (if you've been to Glasgow, you'll know what this means!). It was an experience that helped shape not just my language skills, but also the way I now support and uplift my own students.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I think it’s the human side of teaching that makes all the difference. I take the time to understand each student, to meet them where they are. I bring patience, encouragement, and — where needed — a bit of humour and banter. Language learning can be intimidating, but with the right guide, it becomes a journey full of discovery, joy, and self-expression. That’s what I aim to bring to every lesson.
