About Alex
I'm a former special education teacher of 13 years. I taught math/science in grades 4-8, but can teach high school math (including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus), chemistry, and geology/earth science. I'm currently an engineering student and have recently taken trigonometry, precalculus, calculus 1, and calculus 2 and earned As in all courses. In both semesters of calculus, students reached out to me outside of class for help and often said that my explanations were better than the professor's. I explain not just processes, but WHY we use those processes and the concepts behind them.

In my 13 years as a special education teacher, I realized that a student's fear of failure and expectation of perfection was often the biggest hurdle to his/her learning. With my students, I consistently reinforce that mistakes are an important part of the learning process and should not be avoided or feared. Once I get students to stop fearing mistakes, the learning often happens very naturally and the student's confidence and learning ability grows quickly. This is the foundation of my teaching style.
For math and science, I give students plenty of time to practice skills and use knowledge they've learned. When I can watch a student work, I can easily identify where skill gaps exist and can remediate.
