About Michael

Mike Moulden Bio
Mike holds the position of Crime Scene Science and Fire Investigation expert at the Naif Arab University for Security Science (NAUSS) in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In this role, he is involved in training, research, consultancy, casework, and is working towards a doctoral program.

A highly experienced Fire Scene and Chartered Crime Scene investigator, he has over 30 years of expertise, and has conducted more than 1000 investigations in the UK and around the world.

In 2000, Mike obtained a master's degree in forensic engineering and science from the Royal Military College, and he also holds an honors degree in mechanical engineering from 1997. He has further enhanced his skills through various fire investigation courses, including those offered by IAAI, UK-AFI, Gardeners Associates, and Edinburgh University.

As an Honorary Fellow at Cranfield University, Mike developed and lead the new fire and explosion investigation modules from 2020 to 2023. He is also an honorary senior research fellow at the University of Exeter. In addition to his academic contributions, Mike serves as a Fire/Crime scene instructor for UK Police forces and delivers lectures at multiple universities, including University College London. He actively participates in STEM activities through the INVestin program.

Before joining NAUSS, Mike served as a fire and explosion investigator for EFI Global and Zetetech Forensic Investigations. He received his initial fire scene investigation training in 2005 whilst in the Police Service and has worked with three UK police forces, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), the Special Anti-Crime unit of Trinidad and Tobago (SAUTT), the United Nations, and the Forensic Science Service.

Mike's notable investigations include his involvement in the UN-backed Special Tribunal for Lebanon, where he investigated the assassination of a former prime minister and 21 other assassinations, most of which involved IED's or VBIED's.

He also served as a forensic coordinator for the Kosovo Special Prosecutors office and authored the crime scene section of the revised Minnesota Protocol in 2016 on behalf of the UN Office for Human Rights, specifically authoring the crime scene section.

Throughout his career, Mike has worked on high-profile cases such as the forensic investigation of Grenfell Tower and the German Wings Mass Homicide. He has also been involved in marine fire DVI recovery in the Arabian Gulf. Currently, he volunteers with Geoscope Services, assisting in the forensic recovery of Allied POW/MIA war casualties on behalf of the DPAA.

Mike's expertise extends beyond the UK, as he has completed five tours of Afghanistan to support military operations related to IED exploitation and investigation. Additionally, he mentored a 16-person crime scene investigation unit for the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

Notably, Mike has trained UK special forces in forensic exploitation and recently provided Fire and Explosion investigation training to Ukrainian Law Enforcement. He continues to contribute to the field by delivering ongoing crime scene documentation training for the Institute of International Criminal Investigations (IICI) based in the Hague.

Hi, I hope to work with you and/or your child and reach your goals in the fascinating world of Forensics.

Each student has a bespoke training plan dependent upon their needs, learning strengths and weaknesses and the topics in hand.

Due to the sensitive nature and content of CSI/Forensics, subject matters are age appropriate and can be discussed and agreed upon.

Each lesson of 50 minutes is tailored to be concise and effective with the pace set by the student. Lessons can include theory, desktop exercises, practical demonstrations and case studies.

Real case studies are utlised in order to highlight the learning outcomes and maintain student interest and real world perspectives and applications.

As a qualified tutor I have trained Police professionals, graduates, undergraduates, and at A level and GCSE.
I maintain an active DBS with InvestIN.

I also offer practical tips and advice on careers and interviews in forensic science having recruited many forensic scientists and CSI's, as well as advice on University application.

I am involved in STEM programs and I am one of only two chartered Crime Scene Investigators in the UK.
