About Renan
Hi! I’m Renan Madeira, a pianist, educator, and researcher whose work bridges concert piano performance and the science of musical learning. I hold both a Master’s and a Doctorate in Piano Performance and Music Psychology, and I am currently pursuing a PhD in Behavioral Psychology, focusing on the cognitive and sensory mechanisms involved in piano learning. My research has been published in Psychology of Music, the leading journal in the field, and presented at several international conferences in music psychology and cognition. I have performed internationally, exploring a wide repertoire from Baroque and French Impressionist works to contemporary Latin American music. Along the way, I’ve participated in masterclasses with renowned pianists such as Cristina Ortiz, Guigla Katsarava, Marina Lomazov, and Solungga Fang-Tzu Liu, experiences that have deeply shaped both my artistry and my teaching. I combine my performance experience with research-based insights to help students develop technical mastery, expressive playing, and musical confidence. Lessons are student-centered, with repertoire chosen by the student, and I offer specialized support for children, teens, and adults. I am also a certified Suzuki teacher and can incorporate elements of the method as an option for those interested. Whether you are beginning your musical journey, returning to the piano, or preparing for advanced study, my goal is to help you find your unique voice, express yourself with artistry, and enjoy every step of your musical journey.

My lessons combine the artistry of a concert pianist with the insights of a psychology researcher. With a PhD in Piano Performance and ongoing doctoral research in psychology (behavior and cognition), I offer a unique perspective that balances technical mastery, musical expression, and personal growth. Teaching Method & Techniques - Student-Centered Repertoire: I encourage students to play music they truly enjoy — whether classical, contemporary, or their favorite songs — while building a strong technical and musical foundation. - Suzuki Option: I am a trained Suzuki teacher and can offer lessons fully or partially informed by the Suzuki method, depending on the needs and goals of the student. - Extensive Experience with Children: With over 15 years of teaching experience, I have worked with young beginners as well as teens, tailoring lessons to match developmental stages and learning styles. - Healthy Technique: Drawing on performance research and body awareness, I emphasize natural, ergonomic movement for expressive and sustainable playing. - Holistic Perspective: My psychology background allows me to support focus, motivation, and confidence, especially for students who face performance anxiety. What Sets My Lessons Apart - Double doctoral background in piano performance and psychology. - Lessons available in English, French, and Spanish. - Extensive experience teaching children, beginners, and advanced students. - Suzuki-trained teacher with appropriate certification (offered as an option). - Support for both personal enrichment and professional preparation (auditions, competitions, exams). Who the Lessons Are For - Children & Beginners: Developing a joyful and solid foundation. - Intermediate & Advanced Students: Refining artistry, expression, and technical skills. - Adults: Returning to or beginning piano later in life. Each lesson is an opportunity to grow as a pianist and as a person — cultivating creativity, discipline, and joy through music.
