About Katie
I grew up saturated with creativity.
From the age of 6 I was dancing ballet, playing cello and piano and memorising jazz solos by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane and soul queens like Heather Small and Macy Gray, from the CDs my mother would play on repeat. This led me to develop a naturally highly-attuned sensitivity for music's beautiful patterns (the science of music theory) and how this lands and feels in the body.
Following my passion for inspiring and sharing with others the amazing healing potential of music, I've enhanced my unique approach of combining music learning with body-awareness and movement expression by training in somatics and trauma-informed teaching, through my 12+ years teaching music in 1-1 and group settings to young people, adults and vulnerable teenagers.
My intuitive nature and extensive experience working to follow the flow of energy in a room means I can easily adapt my teaching methods to follow the needs of each individual pupil and their strengths.
My professional qualifications and achievements include: - 1st Class BA(Hons) in Music and History of Art at Durham University - grade 8 flute distinction - debut single received critical acclaim on BBC 6 Music and Jazz FM - winner in a global competition to feature on 'Climate Soundtrack' compilation album to raise awareness and money to combat climate change - professional cellist in 'Hollyseus Fly's music video 'Out Of This World' - recorded cello and bass with producer Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, KT Tunstall) - composed short-film score for international director in Hong Kong - composed original music for an award-winning youth theatre company - Integrative Somatic Trauma-Therapy Certificate (in progress) - 12+ years professionally performing and teaching 1-1 and group classes

Using three main holistic approaches to understanding music theory, I will help you develop a deeper and more confident understanding of:
Modes and Scales
Improvisation
Songwriting – structure, melody and chords
Analytical Listening
I craft the lesson to suit your needs, passions/desires and ways of learning using my intuitive empathetic nature and 12+ years of study, teaching and professional work. I’m able to follow the thread of what lights you up in the lesson and enrich this with theoretical knowledge to widen and deepen your understanding of what you already love.
The three appraches I use are:
Sound as Vibration – creating scales. Understanding the science of how pitch is created leads us to the Harmonic Series, which sheds light on how the Western scale and 12-note 8ve was developed (or discovered) and helps our understanding and appreciation for the beautiful complexity of Western music theory.
Emotional Quality of Theory. Learning the emotional ‘flavours’ of specific scales, modes and the power of subtle note changes within a key can bring your listening, writing and improvising to another level.
Somatic Music – Listening and Making. As a dancer from the age of 3 and learning to play cello from age 5, I have a deeply engrained embodied sense of how movement and music are the same, or dance around the same quality. Somatics is the practice of developing inner-body awareness, and by turning our attention to how certain chords, modes and notes feel in our bodies, I can help you to develop a more deeply embodied sense of understanding music. If you want to write music I can guide you to write from an embodied place – first feeling the music in your body and then translating it into sound using the tools we’ll learn in understanding first the science of vibration and the emotional quality of theory.
*Somatics as a practice of its own has benefits such as moving toward a more resilient wellbeing, learning tools to support trauma release within the body, moving toward a greater sense of purpose in life etc. I am currently undergoing training in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy*
I look forward to bringing enthusiasm, sensitivity and expertise to your music journey :)
