Tauranga is a beautiful city nestled up in the Bay of Plenty, not far from the sand and beaches of Mount Maunganui. For those looking to make the most of the region's temperate climate, why not give tennis a go?

With a range of tennis clubs spread across the area, there is something for everyone. Tennis can be difficult to get a steady rhythm at the beginning but with perseverance, you will be volleying in no time. Practice makes perfect so when looking for a club, find one that is in close proximity to areas you frequent often.

You want to eliminate as many obstacles in your way as possible to set yourself up for success. If the club is close to where you live or work, it is less of a burden to get there. Another thing that is important is the atmosphere, especially if you are a beginner. You want to find tennis clubs that build up your confidence.

When choosing a club look at the programmes they offer, how many social events they have, and even if they have group beginner lessons. These are great ways to meet new people as well as learn the basic skills of tennis.

Where to play Tennis in Tauranga

Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club

Located in the Tauranga Domain, the Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club is one of the oldest clubs in the area. With ten synthetic grass courts for their members to play on, there is plenty of room for all members to develop their skills.

Tennis is considered a summer sport but with the help of floodlights, members are able to play all through the year. No matter what your age, under 10 or over 80, the club welcomes all. Their main goal is to create an environment that is enjoyable for all.

To ensure the success of their members in reaching their goals, the club has an experienced coach to help the juniors in the club reach their potential. During the summer season on Friday nights (well more afternoon) it is junior club night.

There are coach-led sessions to begin the club night and after that, they can play matches for fun. These fun matches are important to build confidence in the young players and to practice in a low-stress environment.

When you get a junior membership it includes all-year access to the courts as well as small group coaching sessions throughout the summer season. There are three programmes; the Grasshoppers for approx 5 to 10-year-olds which introduces them to the game, Late Bloomers for those ages 11 to 18 years old which teaches them skills they may have missed due to starting at a later age, and Competitive for those aged 10 to 18 years that teaches them the skills to confidently play in interclub, local, regional and national tournaments.

Senior members have the option to get coaching sessions as well. During the year they have access to the courts, a range of club days to play socially, open days to all players in Western Bay Of Plenty affiliated clubs and much more. For those who are competitive and those who are beginning there is a wide range of events to keep you coming back for more.

Gate Pā Tennis Club

Since the 1950s the Gate Pā Tennis Club has spread the love of tennis in the community. With a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, this family-friendly tennis club has intergenerational families involved in the club.

With eight light-fitted astroturf courts available for its members, the game can go until 10 pm. For those looking to get back into the game, the club welcomes all players to its courts. They run a very popular summer and winter social league that allows members and non-members to play in teams of four for a seven-week period.

On Saturdays and Wednesday nights seniors can partake in the club day events. These events are designed to be fun and casual so all are welcome to come and play in a low-stress environment. If you're feeling peckish there are even optional dinners available on the Wednesday night sessions.

One thing that stands out at this club is that the junior membership includes year-round club coaching in the fee. There are three sessions available during the week and the players train in age groups. If you want your child to have dedicated coaching lessons, get in touch with the Head Coach.

Pāpāmoa Tennis Club

As you make your way to the Gordon Spratt Reserve you will find the Pāpāmoa Tennis Club. Offering a fun and welcoming atmosphere to all players, members can play here all year long. With twelve plexipave and four tiger turf astro grass courts, there is more than enough space for new members

If you are looking for a club-based programme that puts emphasis on the fun of tennis then this club has what you are looking for. They offer Friday Kids Social Night at no additional cost. This event is a family based so everyone is welcomed and there may even be a cheeky BBQ or three. The kids learn warm-up drills and the sessions focus on fun activities to improve their tennis skills.

There is also professional coaching available throughout the school year. These sessions are $90 per term and develop your child’s tennis skills quickly. It is a good idea if you or the junior wants to get involved in interclub competitions.

Not all of us start playing tennis as wee sprouts but it is never too late to start. The senior members openly welcome beginners and there are organised club play and coaching sessions to build your skill and confidence in the game.

It is worth noting that this club understands families come in all shapes and sizes. They offer a Whanau membership that is for up to 15 people for extended families who live in the same area. For this membership, it is expected that you have junior, youth and senior members. It is a great way to get the family up and moving.

Mt Maunganui Tennis Club

As you make your way along the heart of Mount Maunganui you will find the Mt Maunganui Tennis Club. Members of the club have access to four Rebound Ace hard courts and five Tigerturf courts. All the courts are floodlit so players can access the courts all through the year.

The club offers Junior Pizza Club night where they can build up their skills and enjoy a pizza for $6 once training is finished. The training session itself is included in the junior membership fee. There are also interclub trainings for those looking to get competitive and holiday programmes throughout the year to keep developing their skills.

For the seniors who are looking to get back in the game, there are the Rusty Rackets training sessions. These sessions are great for those who already have a bit of experience on the court and looking to get back into the swing of it. For newbies, there is Tennis Xpress, usually a six-week programme to help you build up the skills you need in order to play. Check our range of tennis guides.
