The bustling and rapidly expanding Manukau City is building up its talent through the wide range of tennis clubs across its region. Tennis is a great way to stay fit, healthy, active, and social with a bit of competition to sweeten it over.

If you are looking for an activity for you, your family, or your kids then look no further. While you have plenty of options to choose from, it is about finding what is right for you. When considering clubs and what membership to take, factor in proximity to you, session times, and of course if the vibe of the club works for you. If you are looking for a tennis club a bit further south there are options in Hamilton.

Where to play Tennis in Howick

Cockle Bay Tennis Club

Located next to the Meadowlands Reserve and Howick squash club you will find the Cockle Bay Tennis Club. The club puts an emphasis on being friendly, family orientated and open to all ages and abilities.

With eight artificial grass courts that each have lights, members are able to play up to 10 pm every night of the week.  For those looking more for coaching, it is included in senior memberships as well as enabling you to take part in a range of club and interclub competitions. The club offers club days, double leagues and team tennis for the players that enjoy the more social side of the sport.

For those with a more competitive edge to their swing, the club is a part of interclub competitions through summer and winter. If you have a younger player who can serve and consistently hit the ball over the net at least four times, they can be a part of interclub and club competitions as well.

Not to forget about those little ones, Cockle Bay Tennis Club has a variety of options for junior players. The beginner section is for those 5 and up who are not quite ready to play matches due to skill level or confidence. With a full-year junior membership, they can attend coaching sessions during the warmer term 4 and term 1. For more options check out our guide on Tauranga.

Where to play Tennis in Mangere

Bridge Park Tennis Club

Tucked away in Mangere Bridge you will find the Bridge Park Tennis Club. This not-for-profit tennis club is about providing accessible programmes and facilities for the local community.

With five outdoor tennis courts, there is a real emphasis on engaging kids in the games. They aim to make the junior member Hotshots programmes affordable and fun. They receive two group training sessions per week for the season and there is also the ability to go further faster with the high-performance coaching sessions for competitive players. There are also Tennis clubs in Christchurch.

For the seniors, there is a variety of interclub competitions to keep you moving. The Bridge Park Tennis Club competes in the summer, winter and twilight tournaments. Being a member enables you to access the courts whenever you want, so recruit a friend into the club and you can play regularly.

Memberships fall into two categories, either casual or interclub for both seniors and juniors (Grasshoppers is for the junior beginners). While there is a strong preference that fees are paid in one go, the club understands that is not always possible and happy to chat about alternatives.

Koru Tennis Club

Tucked away behind the Blyton Lane Reserve Playground is the Koru Tennis Club. This friendly club makes it easy for newbies to come and try with free sessions available on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All ages and abilities are welcome, so get a racket and head on over.

The club caters for a variety of players. There are midweek ladies sessions on Wednesday mornings as well organised play sessions for Veterans on Tuesday and Friday mornings.

For the juniors, there is Saturday coaching which is included in the junior membership fee. The Saturday sessions are aimed at junior beginners, and intermediate-level players (there is also a second intermediate session on Thursdays). For the advanced juniors, Tuesday early evening is when they come out to show off their skills.

Pakuranga Tennis Club

Located under Pigeon Park is the Pakuranga Tennis Club. With six synthetic courts that have floodlights, you can play up to 10 pm every evening.  The club makes an effort to offer not only great tennis but a welcoming and relaxed social environment. With over 450 members, they are obviously doing a lot of things right.

Senior players have a range of options to help them get on, stay on, and develop their skills on the court. This includes coaches that are available and senior club days every week. There are also restricted groups such as Veterans and Midweek Ladies.

If you are looking for something for your kids, there are a variety of social and competitive junior programmes. Included in the junior membership are Saturday coaching sessions, where the juniors are grouped by their age so there is no need to worry about your child being placed in a group they won’t be happy with.

The junior interclub players are on Tuesday afternoons and the beginner members have training on Thursday afternoons to help them prepare for competitions. The cost for this training is included in the annual interclub fee.

For the more advanced junior players aged between 13 to 18 years, their training is late afternoon on Thursdays. With around 16 interclub teams, it is a great way to improve their tennis ability while keeping that social feeling as they play in teams of four.
