With the mighty Waikato River coursing through the city, Hamilton has a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities, groups, associations and clubs. If you are looking to play tennis, there are a few options available to you in regards to clubs.

Throughout New Zealand, there are council-owned tennis courts that anyone can use throughout the year. There is often very little or no cost to use these facilities. So what is the point of paying to join a tennis club if you can play for free?

When you join a tennis club you have access to a wide range of facilities that are better cared for. You also join a community, it is more social and provides opportunities for you to learn and improve your skills. Tennis clubs in Tauranga also have a range of facilities if Hamilton is a little too far.

There are booking systems so you can be assured that there will be a court available to you and of course often there are floodlights to increase playing time. There are coaches attached to the clubs who can offer their services and run programmes for junior and senior players.

Let's go

Where to play Tennis East of the Waikato River

Lugton Park Tennis Club

Based at the Waikato Tennis Trust, the Lugton Park Tennis Club is a welcoming, community-focused and family-oriented club. With three indoor hard courts, eight outdoor astroturf courts and eleven outdoor hard courts, this place is huge. Lugton Park Tennis Club leases the courts from the Waikato Tennis Trusts and has priority use but does relinquish them for Waikato and New Zealand events.

With regular club days and interclub competitions, there is something for everyone here. There are dedicated senior club days that run all year round and they welcome visitors. You can attend three club days before making a decision about whether to become a member for $5 each session. Tennis clubs in Manukau City also offer trial sessions at reduced prices.

With their own highly qualified club coach, who offers coaching for all ages and abilities, you can improve your form no matter what level you are at. For the juniors, there are junior club days on Friday afternoons as well as coaching programmes available for beginners ages 4 to 8 years and juniors from 8 to 12 years.

Lugton Park Tennis Club has a variety of membership options including a reduced fee membership for those 35 years and under, as well as one-day membership where you have a selected day you come in and play.  When selecting your membership, read over the conditions carefully so you choose the correct option for you.

Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club

If you are looking for a lively club to play tennis with, Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club have an active tennis community. With eight astroturf courts that were resurfaced in 2011, you can be assured you are playing on quality courts. Some tennis clubs in Wellington also offer squash and tennis courts.

For those looking to play tennis with a social focus, the club offers club days and nights that let all members come in and play casual games. As the events are run by other club members it enables you to meet new people as well as find tennis buddies for other times during the week.

The Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club welcomes players of all levels and invites non-members to come along and a try for free during these club sessions. For those interested in competing more competitively, Friday evening is when the more serious tennis players battle it out in interclub competitions. You can play singles and doubles in this weekly event.

The club offers Adult, Student, and Junior memberships. The price of these memberships depends on what facilities you would like access to, as the name might suggest there are also six squash courts. Membership for both courts is possible for all ages but access to the gym is not available for junior members.

Families looking to join are able to access group bundles to ease the cost. For those also looking for cheaper memberships, there is a weekday option that allows you to play during the week from 9 am to 3 pm and short-term options.

The club offers monthly, three months, six months and casual options for players. When deciding what options are right for you, try to really work out the frequency you can play, if you can find someone to play with regularly, and how long you wish to play for.

St Peter's Tennis Club

Through the help of its community, St Peter's Tennis Club is one of the leading tennis clubs in Hamilton. With six astroturf courts and one hard court, there is space to play and with the floodlights on each court, members can play all through the year until the late evening.

The well-being of its members is important to the St Peter's Tennis Club and so is the upskilling and development of its members on the court. They have teamed up with the Hamilton Tennis Academy to give its players access to squad or individual coaching sessions. A few tennis clubs in Auckland also have teamed up with academics.

For the little ones, there is the Hotshots programme for beginners and coaching sessions for juniors and elite squads. For those looking at how to elevate their child's game, the coaches focus on tactical, technical, physical and physiological elements of the game to help create a well-rounded player. With 30 National titles and 40 players that have studied in the United States of America on tennis scholarships, their programme is working.

For those who want to keep their kids entertained during the holidays, there are Holiday Training Programmes to build up their skills and fitness. If you want for you, there are private and group lessons available for all levels as well as cardio tennis. These sessions are at an extra cost but when you are a member at St Peter's there is a reduction in fees.

Beerescourt Tennis Club

With over 60 years of history attached to this club, the Beerescourt Tennis Club has the largest junior membership in the region. With four astroturf and two hard courts for members to play on, members get to improve their playing skills on different surfaces. Christchurch also has tennis clubs that offer a wide range of surfaces for players to use.

Starting with the junior section, this club makes sure that the little ones are playing with the right-sized racquets, balls and nets. This helps the children to enjoy the game and the club is a part of the nationwide Tennis New Zealand Hotshots Programme.

Juniors are placed in different groups according to their skill but they are not stuck in that group for a season. If they develop quickly there is flexibility to move players to various groups so that they are always progressing. This is especially helpful for older beginner players as they tend to learn quickly!

For those that are already well acquainted with the game, the Beerescourt Tennis Club partnership with Kiwi Tennis Waikato ensures that every child can achieve their full potential in tennis including supporting national competitors.

For the senior members, there are private and group lessons available as well as more social tennis programmes such as Tennis Cardio. There are no start dates here as they operate on rolling memberships. You can sign up whenever you want without worrying about getting your membership cut short.

As a member, you can use the courts when you want, participate in the weekly club nights, have entry in club championships as well as the ability to play interclub if you wish.
