Canada is home to 21 of the top 500 universities in the world, as well as 32 of the top 1,000. There were 572,415 study permit holders in Canada in 2018. It has some of the greatest study programmes in the world and is home to some of the best research facilities and academic institutions in the world.
If you're thinking about studying overseas with NCEA abroad, Canada should be at the top of your list.

Understanding the Requirements is the first step. Understanding the various prerequisites for schools and the courses they provide is necessary for successfully applying to a Canadian educational institution.

Candidates must also perform a thorough examination of the rules and regulations that govern the application procedure for a study permit. Only accredited colleges and appropriate study durations will be considered. You should begin arranging for your Canadian study visa at least a year ahead of time.

A renewed passport, competency in either English or French with proof of passing mandated language tests with minimal grades/bands, and proof that you can fund your studies as well as the expense of living in the nation are all common requirements for all universities and institutes. Of course, requirements differ by province, which is why this process must be done meticulously and methodically. Want to know the same for Australia, click here.

New Zealand vs Canadian secondary education

In New Zealand, our educational system consists of 13 years, and the NCEA exam is taken during the student's last three years of high school. In Canada, the standard length of time spent in school is twelve years. NCEA may be an option at certain schools, along with the Cambridge A-Level and IGCSE curricula as well as the International Baccalaureate programme; nevertheless, the vast majority of students choose NCEA.

On the other hand, the system in Canada is very different. The first feature that sets it apart is that each province in Canada is responsible for its education system. Unlike in New Zealand and the UK, Canada does not have a standardised national high school curriculum like the NCEA or A-Level. The Canadian curriculum is significantly altered in the province of Quebec, where French is the predominant language. One further feature that sets the Canadian system apart from New Zealand one is that it is modelled after the American one. As a result, the Canadian high school certificate is equivalent to GCSE/IGCSE or our NCEA Level 1 qualification, unless you want to take honours and advanced placement subjects (which do not exist in New Zealand).

The guide to applying to Canada

The first step in deciding on a school is to find out if it is a Designated Learning Institution. Foreign students can only be admitted to DLIs. When applying to study in Canada, you will be needed to complete a certain main course. Although the academic system in Canada is flexible when it comes to changing courses, it is wise to weigh your alternatives ahead of time and choose a major that you are truly passionate about.

Every international student must demonstrate competency in English or French to be admitted to Canada. The IELTS exam is the ideal test for English competence, while some colleges will accept the Cambridge English: Advanced or TOEFL exam score. You can take the DALF, DELF, or TCF exam in French, though the TEF exam is the most popular.

Now is the time to contact the institutions on your shortlist, collect their application packets, and submit them well ahead of time. The ability to apply to a dozen universities can be beneficial, but you must consider the application fee, which can range from $100 to $250.

Now that you've found a school that will accept you, it's time to apply for a Canada Study Permit. You can apply for a visa online or in person at a visa application centre near you. Your application must be accompanied by your passport, the acceptance letter you obtained in the previous step, and verifiable confirmation that you have the funds to study in Canada. If you applied to a school in the province of Quebec, you will also receive a "Certificat d'acceptation du Québec" along with your acceptance letter (CAQ). Make sure to include this document with your application for a study permit. The immigration officer will make a decision on your study visa application when it has been processed and if an interview is required. If you've been approved, it's time to start organising your trip to Canada. Your permit will include a start date, which is the first day it will be in effect. Keep in mind that you will not be able to enter Canada prior to this day. Make your travel arrangements appropriately.

Before permitting you to enter Canada, an immigration official will check your permit and other documentation at the port of entry. This is the last step in the immigration process, and you may now concentrate on starting your studies in Canada as an international student.
