About Dan
I first started teaching guitar part-time in 1996 soon after I graduated from Berklee (my studies focused on jazz, fusion and rock guitar, arranging, music theory, ear training and music transcription) and I've been lucky enough to have had teaching music and guitar as my full-time job and passion since 2007. In that time I've taught thousands of lessons to hundreds of students in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs (I used to teach with a school affiliated with the Park District in Chicago as well as PDs in several northern suburbs) and have come to understand the needs of students and how to help each student reach their musical goals. Besides playing and teaching all styles of guitar (rock, jazz, folk and fingerstyle/Classical being my main styles), I also have a passion for music theory and transcribing music so you can rest assured that with me you will not only be receiving the highest level instruction but also the finest hand-crafted musical materials as well (I use the latest Guitar Pro notation software for my lesson materials). You can check out my music transcriptions on my YouTube channel- see the link below for one example.

Intermediate and advanced players get the most from my lessons but students of all levels are welcome. My lessons are geared towards YOUR progress as not only a guitar player, but as a musician. This means not just learning to play a song but also understanding the building blocks- the music theory- which make up your favorite songs and pieces of music. Here's a typical lesson of mine: once you have you chosen a song you want to learn I go ahead and transcribe the chords, melody and solo(s) and present you (usually by the next week) with a professional-level transcription of the guitar part(s) of your song. I don't transcribe and write out the song while you are sitting in the lesson- don't worry! I spend many hours each week transcribing songs for my students outside of the lessons- it's totally normal for me to provide my students with the the highest quality materials to learn from. As I teach you step-by-step how to play it, I also show you the ins-and-outs of the chords and the melody and how to apply this knowledge to your own playing as well as in your own songwriting, compositions and developing an intuitive, intelligent approach to learning soloing and improvisation. As new topics come up in your song selections I will create new, original exercises and lessons designed to expand on the topics presented in your song selection so you keep getting better and better! In my many years of teaching I've come to learn that understanding music theory- even just small bits- is the key to breaking through the proverbial 'wall' so many guitar players hit in their progress. It's the key to not only getting over this 'wall' but also in allowing you to eventually being able to teach yourself. I've been helping guitar players get over this challenge full-time for 18 years. As I always say to my students, I went to Berklee so you don't have to- join me and let me help you get over that 'wall'!

Working with Dan for more than a decade now - I can say that he keeps things fresh. We work many genres - blues, rock, folk, jazz, etc. We dive into theory when needed, and into "feel" when that informs our choices as well. I continue improving my skills and knowledge of guitar!

I have been doing online lessons primarily since 2020. First lesson with a new student is usually us getting acquainted and you giving me a list of songs/pieces you would like to learn. Time permitting I can even I show you a bit of your first song right away to get you started or write you out a specific guitar exercise to practice. Week 2 is when when we start getting into the nitty-gritty of your first song selection. Depending on the song, it could take up to 2 weeks (or occasionally longer, depending on the length/difficulty of the piece) for me to finish transcribing it in full but each of my students receives a full professional quality pdf of each song they learn as well as a link to the video of your completed song transcription that I post on my YouTube page so you can hear it as well! I posted the link to a song ('Melissa' by The Allman Brothers) that I transcribed and taught to one of my students recently so you can see and hear the quality that you will be receiving as my student. I take a lot of pride in my transcribing and it's one of the features I offer that, I believe, makes lessons with me stand out as unique and superior to what most other teachers offer.
