Here are some quotes from my current students:
"I love working with Emilia. I'm a professional opera singer but I recently developed an interest in singing jazz. Emilia has such a warm, giving, and knowledgeable approach. She gives me so much inspiration. She instantly put me at my ease (improvising and singing in a far more flexible style from the point of view of a classical singer is scary!) and she is brilliant at listening - both to what I have to say and to the way that I sing. Her love of jazz, of voices, and of singing and music, shines through. It is, of course, a wonderful bonus to get to hear her sublime singing and unique interpretation of each song! I'm very much looking forward to attending her Summer Course in Izola this year". -Elizabeth Cragg, Professional Opera singer.
"-My first time working with Emilia Martensson was on this year's course in Izola, Slovenia. I was impressed by the amount of progress I've witnessed with my singing during the week of the course, so I also decided to take a few one on one lessons with her. She helped me to improve my singing confidence, feel more free and relaxed when singing and let go of fear. Major progress was already seen after the first lesson. During the lessons, I was introduced to a variety of different vocal technique exercises suitable for my voice type and the things I need to work on. I am also able to record all of the sessions, which is very helpful when practicing at home. I am always very excited about each session with her because it gives me a lot of encouragement and makes me feel inspired.-Ajda Student at Ljubljana Conservatoire.
-"I have known Emilia for 3 years, from her teaching on the Sligo Jazz Festival course, then at her own Beyond Vocals jazz in Slovenia (2 years) and several workshops and events in London, and private lessons. She is a fantastically inspiring teacher, sympathetic and sensitive to each student’s needs, as well as being one of the best jazz vocalists around herself. She knows a great deal about the technical side of singing, as well as helping with how to interpret a song in an individual way. I have made so much progress since working with her. My background as a university lecturer in music myself means that I feel well-placed to strongly recommend her teaching".-Ross (University lecturer in Music)
"The course took me from amateur to being able to perform in a professional manner, in less than a week. Emilia was professional, creative, and incredibly supportive of all her students on the course, getting to know each of us individually and developing us in our own direction. Best thing I've ever done in my life" -Alice Music Student
"-Emilia has been giving me singing lessons since I was 15 at school and I am now 26 and have never wanted to leave! Never will you ever meet such an amazingly supportive and incredible teacher and person. Emilia has a huge knowledge of many different music genres and is very active in her own career as a jazz singer and composer which is very inspiring. She always puts emphasis on working towards where you want to go with your singing and genuinely cares. She is also incredibly funny and lovely to be around". (-Anna, Student at Abbey Road production)

I work together with my students in developing clear goals and structure around their singing, creativity, and career development and support them in finding a consistent route toward becoming the singers, artists, performers, musicians, and bandleaders they strive to become.
TOGETHER WE'LL EXPLORE THE FOLLOWING TOPICS!
How do I practice and what do I practice?
In our first lesson, I will diagnose your voice and provide you with a customised vocal routine aligned with your wishes, needs, and lifestyle. We'll also explore how we go about creating structure and discipline around our practice to make it inspiring and sustainable.
Vocal Technique & The Beyond Vocals Exercise Library:
My passion as a singing teacher is to hone in on every singer's natural and unique sound and to work towards strengthening and refining what's already accessible, as well as expanding beyond. Being a great singer is in my opinion not about having the best chops and advanced instrument, instead, I believe it is about having a really sophisticated awareness of how YOUR voice works.
The Beyond Vocals Library includes vocal routines and exercises covering:
-Breath control and coordination
-Strength and flexibility
-Timbre and nuance
-Optimisation of resonance
-Pitch control
-Rhythm and time
Etc.
The style of your breath is the style of your singing:
Breathing should feel easy. Very often we overcomplicate it as singers. We'll explore the benefits of nose breathing and the importance of being in a 'rest and digestive state' whilst working on your breathing techniques.
Our voice and our body:
As singers, we need to develop a mature awareness of posture and how our individual body and mind are connected. We will explore how we can optimise breath through body movements and how these also can take us out of our mind and deeper into our bodies.
We sing with our minds:
Working on our mindset around creativity, expression, vulnerability, our strengths, and our weaknesses as singers and performers is equally as important as practicing fancy vocal exercises. Together we can explore a range of exercises in how to develop a more healthy mindset around our singing.
Singers are musicians!
A lot of singers have an inferiority around instrumentalists.
I am passionate about helping singers develop more confidence around leading a band, on stage and in the rehearsal room. Our main gig as singers is to tell a story WELL and in that process we want to be able to communicate our musical ideas to the band so that we make sure to deliver the story and the vision WE want to deliver.
Trust your musical instincts!
Whether you want to go into jazz repertoire or not I believe exploring vocal improvisation is a great way to develop your own unique sound and approach and to build up your confidence in expressing your own musical ideas. We all want to be able to get to a place where we can sing what we hear at that very moment, right?
The Jazz Approach:
I view jazz as an approach to music, which you can apply to any genre. It teaches us how to make musical decisions in the moment and it guides us toward becoming more present in the music through really listening AND responding to what is going on around us.
Learning repertoire:
How do we learn a song from the inside and out so that we can become totally free within the structure of the song? We'll first make sure we secure the melody with strong pitch, tone, time, and feel. Then we dive into interpreting the lyrics and ways of approaching the song to tell our own unique story.
Prioritize your creativity:
Very often the things we care about the most end up at the bottom of the priority list. Sound like something you do? I will help you identify what is important to you right now in terms of your creativity and help you take small steps toward prioritizing your singing and creativity by exploring simple systems and ways of structuring your time, aiming towards building new healthy, consistent, TINY habits.
I'd love to hear about any other areas in music that you'd like to explore and develop, whether you are a beginner or an experienced singer.
Please get in touch for a free online consultation lesson where we can get to know each other before you book your first lesson.
You will also then be able to hear more about BEYOND VOCALS my online vocal community which offers a membership program, subscription plan, recording and performance opportunities, and an annual Jazz Vocal Summer Course in Slovenia.
This is what my wonderful students are saying about me:
-"It can still be pretty rare to find someone at the top of their game as an artist and musician, who is able to communicate and share their insight and depth of knowledge: someone, who seems genuinely dedicated to bringing out the absolute best in each person, wherever they are currently at in their musical journey, with so much energy, professionalism, and heartfelt honesty and wisdom. -Katie
-"The way she taught us, as individual voices, within a beautifully held, supportive group space, touched me deeply, as well as helping to develop many concrete new skills, in a very short time. Each day was filled with a mixture of warmth, practical guidance, discipline and precision, fun, hard work, creative imagination, and a lot of humanity'. -Malka

-"I've had so many different music teachers over the years and Emilia has by far been my favorite! She's an incredibly insightful teacher who knows how to bring the best out in every voice, she makes you feel totally at ease and her joy and passion is completely contagious. She has also created a lovely singing community where you can meet like-minded people and continue to develop through peer support and encouragement. I can't recommend her highly enough!"-Leah
