About Stuart
I have completed 20 years of successful teaching and tutoring. I have gained experience of teaching years 7 to 11 Science and several years teaching A levels and IB in Chemistry and Physics. Recently I was an examiner for Cambridge A level Chemistry. I have also successfully taught GCSE Maths. A large component of my degree included Maths and Physics. I have used my experience to develop a dynamic positive teaching style. Across the academic spectrum students find popular science in the media engaging and I make full use of this. I have developed online teaching skills using Meet and Zoom and prepared many online lessons. I use a lot of interactive resources and ongoing assessment. Before coming into teaching I enjoyed many years working in the Shipbuilding Industry. This invaluable experience has enabled me to have knowledge of life outside the classroom and has enabled me to form a more rounded character. This has benefited work as a tutor as well as strengthening my ability as a team player with colleagues. One of the most rewarding times I have spent was when I led a team of teachers on an international project with schools in France, Portugal, Germany and Latvia. We produced a very creative project looking at the environment and the rich cultural diversity of the five countries. This experience greatly enhanced my professional development and so was worth the considerable amount of extracurricular time and effort we put in. Science is an essential skill for life in the 21st Century throughout the world more than ever before with the challenges we face. Because of this I want to promote the highest standards of learning. The best way to do this is to convey high expectations from the beginning, produce creative enjoyable opportunities for learning then take time to reflect on and celebrate the outcome. I have been active in my contribution to the wider community by managing student football teams, organising and taking part in football and badminton. I am involved in Karate and I have run Science and Chess clubs. Dear Sirs,
Context :
I was head of science at the English school of Kyrenia Northern Cyprus from August 2017 to August 2019. I worked with Stuart from August 2018 to July 2019 having interviewed him during the previous spring. He primarily had sole responsibility for teaching ‘A’ level Chemistry both AS and A2 for Edexcel International ‘A’ level. He also taught some KS3 classes.
Teaching :
In line with school and departmental policy, I formally observed Stuart teaching on at least two occasions. These were ‘A’ level classes and Stuart demonstrated solid subject knowledge and his lessons employed a wide range of different activities which included practical demonstrations and appropriate use of technology to enhance the lesson. In particular, I recall that Stuart used Kahoot quizzes as his plenary during which the students were split into small teams so that there was an element of competition. His lessons also had appropriate pace.
Other Duties :
Stuart contributed to the life and work of the department as a whole, with activities such as producing the end of term exams for use by the whole department. He was a form tutor and took part in extra curricular activities in line with school expectations.
Professionalism :
Stuart was always professional and I had no concerns in terms of attendance, punctuality, appearance, or relationships with students, parents, or colleagues. Moreover, he was an amiable and sociable member of my team.I would recommend Mr Smith for any teaching role. Throughout the time I have known Mr Smith he has always been a consummate professional. He takes his teaching responsibility very seriously and strives to ensure the best learning outcomes for all his students.
