I break down technical concepts into manageable bitesize chunks, making accounting engaging and fun. I aim to help my students understand a topic through alternative explanations and question practice. I like to refer to the Chartered Accountancy exams as playing the examiners game, the more you play the better you get. My goal is to give you the technique and strategy to be the best you can be at playing this game enabling you to profit from the knowledge #positiveaccountingvibesonly.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I studied Accounting for A-level and it was evident that I had a knack for numbers and an innate ability to grasp the subject well, so I pursued this further by studying Accounting at University and my hard work was rewarded as I graduated with a First Class Honours #proud. Whilst studying I had participated in volunteering activities whereby I was helping students with their learning, and it became apparent to me fairly early on that I really enjoyed passing on my knowledge, it gave me a real sense of purpose and reward. I went on to qualify as an ACA and moved into the education sector shortly afterwards, working for a renowned market leader in the delivery of professional qualification tuition. This enabled me to marry my two strengths in a relationship that really worked, my natural flair for Accounting and my passion for passing on knowledge to others, I have not looked back since #winning.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I am an approved partner in learning with the ICAEW and teach various modules under the ACA syllabus ranging from Accounting and Reporting to Audit and Financial Management. I absolutely love Financial Accounting and Reporting, it's all very logical. As a student, I particularly enjoyed these subjects because they were very much aligned with what I was doing in the workplace when I was training to be an accountant. This meant what I was learning in college corresponded to the practical work I was doing in my job and this really helped reinforce my understanding.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Whilst studying for my final exams for ACA, my corporate reporting tutor was a great inspiration. Not only was she able to clearly and concisely impart knowledge, but I felt she had a really engaging method of delivery too. This made me realise quite early on the importance of making content interesting.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor is one that has passion and excitement for the subject they teach, as this will mean they can make the subject interesting for the student.

It was Albert Einstein who said 'If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough'. Therefore, whilst subject knowledge is imperative, equally important is the tutor's ability to relay the knowledge in an easy to digest manner.

I also think that a good tutor should be versatile, in other words willing and capable of adapting their delivery to cater for a learners need as each learner is unique.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was studying Accounting I would always get confused when drafting the T- accounts and could not remember which side was used to post the debit entries (DR) and which side was used for the credit entries (CR). My teacher at the time gave me a method of remembering it and I use it even today to help my students; she said 'DRive on the LEFT or CRash on the RIGHT'. Since then I have never confused the posting on the T-accounts 😀

I try to utilise mnemonics or short cuts when teaching my students as I understand the benefits it has to their learning.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Accounting standards are always changing, as is the ACA syllabus. This means I must acquaint myself with any updates and consider how these will be examined. It's great because I get to be a student whilst I learn about the updates, and this helps me to consider how I want to impart the knowledge to my students. Learning is a lifelong process and I get to witness this first hand with the subjects I teach.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

My passion is helping others. Having been through the process of completing professional exams I know how gruelling the experience can be, hence being able to offer aspiring accountants an opportunity to understand the content and to enjoy the process is a great reward for me #positiveaccountingvibesonly.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

As well as being an approved partner in learning with the ICAEW, I have won the prestigious Chris Reay Memorial Prize for obtaining the highest average marks for the professional stage ACA exams. Additionally, I have over 6 years' experience working as a senior tutor for a renowned professional qualifications tuition provider therefore, I have taught thousands of budding accountants already. My services may just be the asset that you need to balance your books.
