This led Freud to ask patients to talk about whatever they wanted. This is what is called today “free association”. Freud published a book called The Interpretation of Dreams and that’s the first building block of psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis was revolutionary at its time, because it was based on the idea that our personalities were shaped by unconscious motives; we are profoundly affected by mental processes that we are not even aware of. This was really hard to grasp back in those days and there was a lot of resistance, primarily due to the fact that this theory gave irrationality a major role in our decisions.

Psychoanalysis was then the process for treating different mental illnesses that back in those days were uncured or baffled physicians to no answer for these maladies.
