Psychology: Structuralism, Functionalism and Psychoanalysis.

When hearing the word Psychology, most people think “therapist” and a patient unloading their mental charge. But in fact Psychology is one of the most widely diverse sciences in terms  of the questions it proposes.

This diversity inside the realm of one science is due to the questions posed in relation to the human mind. Mainly we have Structuralism, Functionalism and Psychoanalysis.

Structuralism has to do with breaking down the mind and brain into simple structures, just like physicists had done it with matter.

The main two fathers of psychology and structuralism are Wilhelm Wundt and his student Edward Bradford Titchener. They tried to understand the structure of conscientiousness, by getting patients to look inward, asking them how they felt when they had different experiences, such as watching the moon in a silent night.

Functionalism has its start with William James, an American physician and philosopher, who basically focuses his attention on the function of behaviour. This idea was inspired by Charles Darwin's idea that adaptive behaviours are conserved throughout the evolutionary process.

Sigmund Freud might be the most renowned name in psychology in popular culture. When we think of psychology, we think of psychoanalysis. Freud started his own practice concerned with nervous disorders. During this time, he witnessed a patient talk about her traumatic memories and the more the patient did this, the more her symptoms were reduced. The name of the patient was Anna O.

This led Freud to ask patients to talk about whatever they wanted. This is what is called today “free association”. Freud published a book called The Interpretation of Dreams and that’s the first building block of psychoanalysis.

Psychoanalysis was revolutionary at its time, because it was based on the idea that our personalities were shaped by unconscious motives; we are profoundly affected by mental processes that we are not even aware of. This was really hard to grasp back in those days and there was a lot of resistance, primarily due to the fact that this theory gave irrationality a major role in our decisions.

Psychoanalysis was then the process for treating different mental illnesses that back in those days were uncured or baffled physicians to no answer for these maladies.

It is no surprise that more often than not we find ourselves eager to learn about something, or even we have discovered what we want to base our career on, but we do not know how to proceed. What should I do first and who am I supposed to contact?

If you are interested in learning Psychology and you would like to start spending some time studying it and getting to know this discipline better, there are many ways you can go about learning about it or reinforcing your studies of it.

First we need to understand that Psychology is fascinating since it is the study of human behaviour. It helps us think of other’s perspectives and how other people make decisions and what their background is.

Psychology is grounded on the scientific method and so students of Psychology should learn the scientific method well and be able to apply it to other issues.

So if you would like to study Psychology, learning psychology starts as a science and as an intellectual study of the human mind.
