The Benefits of NCEA

NCEA—or the National Certificate of Educational Achievement—has been reconstructed to provide a more holistic overview of your understanding and ability to apply concepts taught in class. This places more of a focus on your experience throughout the year, rather than stressing yourself due to hugely heavier weightings come to the end of year final exams. Even NCEA in general is starting to sound a lot better, hey. This means you get heaps of chances through the year to learn and develop your skills, getting better each time, and developing the knowledge you will take into your future study or workplaces. It really is designed with your success and well being in mind. Hey, there's even a news article on why NCEA Level 1 (including maths) is so important.

What about Maths?

Maths is actually a hundred times cooler than we think. And if you already knew that? You must be one of the cool ones. Seriously, maths is everywhere, making way more than we know possible. Computers, air travel, sending rockets into space…the discovery of mathematicians are even harnessed by builders, architects and artists to this day. Mathematics has so many hidden applications and is a driving factor behind a multitude of the industries and technologies we use in our day to day lives. Even social media would not exist without it. Mathematicians go on to tackle ‘real’ problems, giving the rest of the world much-needed solutions to said problems. How insane would it be to be a part of all of this? You can find mathematical algorithms powering the backend of many of the online shopping processes that we have all come to depend upon, especially in this day and age. Mathematics is also prominent in the plethora of jobs involving data interpretation. So pretty much, maths gives you an insight into the inner workings of our world, providing valuable experience in whatever direction you choose across subjects, careers and situations.

And for those of you thinking ahead, dreaming of a baller life retiring at age 30, mathematics can be the first stepping stone to get your foot in the door for a lucrative career such as Information Technology, accounting, engineering, science, banking and business. It is a teaser for the real world. If your brain can logically process and solve a mathematics problem, you are well equipped to be on your way to solve nearly any problem life throws your way. That is why, as a STEM subject, you will have a competitive advantage over your peers in the outside world, as employers strongly favour this subject and the skills it offers. What skills, you’re wondering? Read on and find out below!

How Does Maths Achieve This?

Great promises, but how do they actually come to fruition? Maths teaches you transferrable skills that you will find you can apply to just about anything. These include data analysis, data interpretation, organisation, critical thinking, communication, time management, communication, as well as facilitating better decision making.

Two of these fundamental skills in particular relate to creative and analytical skills. These are super heavily sought after by employers. Mathematics actually plays into the neurological pathways in our brain that helps develop such creativity and analytical capabilities. It is actually linked to developing increased grey matter in your brain, which is responsible for movement, emotions and memory. You heard right. You are literally growing your brain. Mind-blowing. Or should we say. Mind growing.

What if I don’t Need Maths?

We will let you in on a little secret. Here at Superprofs, we will never convince you to do anything you do not want to do. However, we promise never to lie to you, either. So, you do not have to study Mathematics if it is not your cup of tea, or to paraphrase—your pencil case of calculators. But, you can never escape maths. You will need it when budgeting for grocery shopping or saving up for that trip you and your mates have been meaning to go on for ages. You will need it in the future when it comes time to buy your first home and understand loan and mortgage rates. You will oftentimes also need aspects of it the further you progress down seemingly unrelated fields, such as biology, or art. So our question to you is, if it is so embedded in daily life, why not get better at it? The first step in doing so is developing a basic understanding of NCEA Level 1 Maths. If you are looking for a tutor who is experienced in the field to guide your decision, or even help you once you are well underway with NCEA Level 1 Maths, let us know. We have so many successful students just like you, and we would love to help.
