Tips for Going to Swimming Spots

Remember that while Hamilton and the greater Waikato region have great outdoor spaces and swimming locations, many of these are largely uncontrolled areas of natural beauty and offer a completely different experience than swimming at a local pool.

Before you go to any of these locations, check the weather, the condition of any trails you may take, and take the proper safety precautions. Remember that if you're going even further afield to one of Auckland's best swimming spots to check the conditions there and along the route.

Check the Current and Water Flow

Be aware of currents and water flow. Rivers can have deceptively strong currents, especially after rain. Check how fast and strong the current is before you swim, and avoid swimming if the flow seems fast or the river is deeper than usual due to increased rainfall.

Know the Water Depth and Hazards

Natural swimming locations can have rocks, submerged logs, and other debris that mightn't be visible from above the water. Be sure to check the depth of any water before diving and make sure that there aren't any other hazards in the water.

Be Wary of Extreme Temperatures

Remember that even if the weather is particularly warm, you may experience "cold shock" if you enter cold water too quickly.

It's recommended that you enter colder water slowly and not spend too long in it, giving your body time to adjust.

Swim with a Buddy

Though some of these spots are perfect for some time alone, swimming with a buddy or somebody else is always recommended.

Swimming alone comes with far more risks; having a friend or family member nearby can make all the difference if anything happens.

Respect Local Safety Signs and Guidelines

In many cases, swimming spots will have safety recommendations, and local governments will also post information on the best and safest ways to enjoy them.

Do your research before you go.
