Reasons to Learn How to Draw

Before we look at some of the places in Hamilton where you can learn how to draw, let's look at why you should start drawing in the first place.

There are plenty of great reasons to learn how to draw so if you already have a good reason, go for it. If not, you could easily pick any of these reasons and then pick up a pencil and a sheet of paper!

Appreciate Art

The quickest and easiest way to improve your appreciation of any kind of art is by doing it yourself. Playing a musical instrument will make you appreciate music more, acting will make you appreciate cinema and theatre more, and drawing will make you appreciate aesthetic art and sketches far more than you did before.

That isn't to say that those who don't make art don't appreciate it, but it certainly helps you to appreciate it more when you've been through the processes required to make it yourself!

Appreciate Nature

Drawing will help you to appreciate art, but it can also help you to appreciate nature. There's nothing like looking at a landscape for hours while you draw it to show you just how beautiful our planet is.

Drawing is Enjoyable

If you're going to start any new hobby, you should make sure that it's fun. For most people who draw, they do it because they love it and find it really enjoyable.

Get Better at Concentrating

When you learn to draw, you'll also learn to concentrate. Drawing isn't something that you can do in a matter of seconds.

Of course, you could always do a quick sketch, but for the most part, you might be spending hours working on a drawing and this takes an excellent level of concentration.

You won't be expected to sit down and draw for hours when you first start learning how to draw, but as your drawings become more and more advanced, the time you'll put into them will also increase.

You'll naturally improve your focus and concentration as you progress, which will also help you to focus on other tasks and not just drawing.

Improve Observation Skills

Unless you're drawing something from imagination, you'll likely be using a reference or looking at something for a good amount of time.

You'll learn to look closely at things and you'll naturally become more observant as you progress. This will also be a skill that will help you in other aspects of your life and not just when you're drawing.

Learn How to Solve Problems Creatively

Drawing is actually creative problem-solving. You have to find a way to visually represent things that are three-dimensional on a two-dimensional medium.

They also need to work out the best way to get their art to not only represent the subject but also all the other ways they want their art to be perceived.

Relieving Stress

Drawing is quite therapeutic and sitting down, focusing on something, and drawing can be an excellent way to relieve stress.

Some people find drawing quite meditative and relaxing whereas others use drawing and creating art as a cathartic process to express emotions and feelings through art.

Self-expression

Last but not least, drawing is a great way to express yourself. In addition to this being really cathartic, a lot of artists find this to be the driving force behind their art.

Other Ways to Learn How to Draw

The places we've mentioned so far are just a few of the ways you can learn how to draw in Hamilton. There are plenty of ways to learn how to draw and how you decide to do it is completely up to you.

Some of these approaches can be done on their own, but generally, you'll want to use a combination of different approaches.

Again, this is by no means an exhaustive list of all the ways to learn how to draw, but it should be a good starting point for anyone new to drawing.

Ask at Art Supply Stores

If you go to an art supply store to buy pencils and paper, it's a good time to ask some questions about how to learn to draw.

These shops are generally well-connected to the local art community and point you in the right direction. It's completely free to ask and you'll find they have their ear pretty close to the ground in terms of local events, artists, classes, etc.

Some shops may even have a community bulletin board with details of classes and events for you to peruse.

Drawing Meetups and Hangouts

Local artists and people who like drawing tend to regularly meet up to hang out while they draw or sketch.

Again, you can ask at a local art shop or look online for these communities, where they like to congregate, and when they do so.

It's quite common for artists to arrange meetups in cafés, bars, libraries, etc. and these are great ways to practise drawing while getting feedback and advice from others.

Go to the Library

In the modern age, it might seem old-fashioned to suggest the library, but they're actually great places to learn about art and drawing and will often provide spaces for people to study or in your case, practise drawing.

If you prefer to draw in a quiet or calm place, then the library is likely your best option, especially if you can't find a quiet corner to practise drawing in at home.

Go to Art Galleries

In most art galleries, you're not only free to view the art but you're also allowed to sit down and practise drawing. In the past, it was very common for artists to spend time in the world's greatest galleries and copy the works of other masters as part of their study.

If you want to get better at drawing, you can head to an art gallery, take a seat, and start sketching some of the other works.

With the advent of the internet, this obviously isn't as commonplace nowadays as you can very quickly find pictures of famous works to use as a reference, but some artists still prefer this approach to learning how to draw.

Use Online Resources

The internet is full of resources for learning how to draw and finding out more about art. Whether it's video tutorials explaining techniques or online courses via MOOCs (massive open online courses), there's more than you'll ever need.

Much like everything else on the internet, the quality of resources, video tutorials, and everything else isn't necessarily consistent so it's a good idea to ask around on social media, groups, and forums.
