Browne School of Art

The Browne School of Art can be found in Grey Lynn by the Auckland CBD. It offers a broad range of day and evening courses in art, drawing, painting, and printmaking.

There are regular classes offered during term time as well as courses on evenings and weekends. For example, there are beginners' classes in drawing and painting and life drawing classes on weekday evenings. During the weekends, there are short courses and weekend workshops.

A lot of the evening classes are also available during the daytime so it's quite likely that you'll be able to find a class that you can attend.

Corban Estate Arts Centre

The Corban Estate Arts Centre plays host to exhibitions, events, public workshops, and resident artists.

For those interested in learning how to draw or paint, there are often workshops on different kinds of artistic techniques. These are often one-off or limited workshops so check back regularly to see what's going on.

Creative Matters Art Workshops

Creative Matters offers workshops, after-school art classes, holiday art workshops, and art parties for kids. There are also professional development courses in the visual arts available for teachers and programmes for artists, too.

The classes for kids usually take place at schools or community venues and teach visual art skills like painting, designing, drawing, etc. They also teach art-adjacent thinking skills like creating, experimenting, taking risks, making decisions, etc. These classes are for children aged 6-13 and there are discount options available for siblings.

There are also art workshops during the school holidays across various venues in and around Auckland.

Erin Hill Sketching

Erin Hill Sketching offers a range of art classes including many focused on drawing and sketching. The Beginner Sketching Classes, for example, is an 8-week course that's limited to 10 people and includes a full sketch kit.

After that, students can move on to the Ongoing Sketching Classes. These also last 8 weeks and come with a full sketch kit.

If you can't commit to 8 weeks, there are also one-day workshops for those interested in learning how to sketch.

Lake House Arts Centre

The Lake House Arts Centre offers art classes for kids and teens as well as classes for adults. There are a range of classes for sketching, drawing for beginners, relaxation through drawing, life drawing, etc.

For kids, there are also classes on drawing, cartooning and animation, illustration techniques, and other art classes.

The arts centre also offers classes in performing arts like music and drama.

Mairangi Arts Centre

The Mairangi Arts Centre (MAC) offers art classes and workshops both during term and the holidays.

The classes for children and teens include clay and 3D workshops, drawing and painting, general art classes, as well as holiday workshops.
Adults can also learn about clay and glass, drawing and painting, or attend workshops.

Discounts on classes and workshops are available for those with a membership.

As an arts centre, there are also exhibitions and displays to go see.

Realisticus Art Academy

Realisticus Art Academy focuses on teaching kids aged between 5 and 14 how to draw and is available across several Auckland areas.

There are weekly after-school classes during term time as well as art classes for kids during the school holidays, too.

These classes take place usually in community centres, schools, churches, etc. across many locations in and around Auckland.

Other Places to Learn How to Draw

There are plenty more art centres and classes out there for aspiring artists or anyone wanting to learn to draw, but these aren't the only ways to learn how to draw.

Again, this won't be every possible way to learn how to draw outside of classes, but that doesn't mean you can't start your journey with one or several of these approaches.

Online Resources

Given that you've already found this article, you've clearly been looking online for ways to learn how to draw.

You can find plenty of websites with drawing tutorials that you can follow, explainers for different techniques, and even drawing courses on MOOCs (massive open online courses).

When drawing, you can find plenty of references to practise simply by searching on Google images, but there are also websites where you can follow along to guides or tutorials.

MOOCs will include plenty of free and premium courses, too. With most online courses, you can learn at your own pace and won't need to necessarily attend classes at a certain time or day.

Private Drawing Tutors

It probably won't surprise you to know that we at Superprof, an online private tutoring platform, strongly believe that private tutoring is one of the best ways to learn any skill.

The reason for this is that we know that every person is different and needs to be taught in different ways. In drawing classes, you can't guarantee that your teacher, no matter how good they are, can effectively teach every student in attendance.

With a private tutor, especially in one-on-one tutorials, your lessons can be adapted to you, your level, what you want to know, and the kind of art that inspires you.

You can also get private drawing tutors in-person and online so no matter where you are in Auckland, you can still enjoy private drawing tutoring.

You can also get group tutoring, which usually makes the sessions far more affordable, but this does mean that you won't get to enjoy all the benefits of being the only student in the session.

Social Media and Online Communities

Elsewhere online, you can also look for art and drawing community websites, forums, and social media groups.

These are great places to ask people for advice, get more information on the best places to find lessons, and even get feedback on your work.

Fortunately, there's no lack of these groups and while some groups are certainly “nicer” than others, you can always join another group if you find it isn't a good fit for you or certain members of the group aren't particularly helpful.

Your Local Library

This might feel like an outdated suggestion, but your local library is a great place to learn how to draw, get more information, and even practise drawing.

Most libraries have resources on drawing, internet access, and even spaces where you can sit down and draw. If you don't have any space at home to practise drawing or can't find a quiet space to do it, your local library could provide the solution.

Reasons to Study Drawing

Now that you know where you can study drawing in Auckland and how to get started, you might want to know why you should learn to draw in the first place.

Perhaps you have a creative itch that you need to scratch. There's something really rewarding about creating something and drawing is a great way to express thoughts, emotions, and ideas.

Drawing is also really relaxing, too. Many people choose to draw because it allows them to sit down, forget about or process their problems, and deal with stress.

While you can always do a quick sketch, drawing can be time-consuming and can help people learn to focus and be more patient. The more you draw, the more patient you'll become and the better you'll be at focusing on a task for a long period. These are transferrable skills, too, so you'll be able to enjoy these benefits even when you're not drawing.

Your hand-eye coordination will improve with drawing and so will fine motor skills. For very young children, this is also useful as they need to develop these skills and drawing and other arts and crafts are a great way for them to do this.

Last but not least, you'll also gain a greater appreciation for art and the arts by drawing. You'll develop an eye for aesthetics and an even better understanding of the creative process and what it takes to make art.

If you've decided that it's time you started learning how to draw, why not check out some of the local drawing tutors in Auckland on the Superprof website? Many of them offer the first lesson for free so you can always try a few different ones out to make sure you choose the one that's perfect for you and your budget!
