My teaching methods are based on the widely-researched and proven model of gradual release. Students are made aware of the learning goals at the beginning of every lesson as well as being given an outline of what they need to DO to demonstrate they have met the goal/s. This is then followed up by a model of the requirements (“I do”), a JOINT task where I work WITH the student/s to demonstrate the success criteria through a hands-on approach, wherever possible (“We do”). Finally, students complete a similar task independently (“You do”). A key feature to this strategy is giving continual feedback to learners to assist and improve their learning, as well as, at the end of each task, having students reflect on their own learning in relation to the pre-set criteria communicated to students at the beginning of the lesson. I believe that ALL students can succeed providing tasks are specifically planned to address individual needs and are supported by an encouraging, well-planned, caring and supportive teacher who celebrates with the child every small learning improvement made along the way.
I am a specialist literacy and numeracy primary school teacher (K-6) with 25 years teaching experience to a diverse range of students, including special needs. I excel in diagnosing gaps in student learning and designing needs-based individualised programs to ‘fill’ these gaps so students can progress and develop more effectively, matching the individual’s learning style with relevant teaching strategies. Children under my instruction and encouragement consistently flourish as they, often for the first time, experience success, improved performance in class and on standardised tests, as well as improving their confidence, willingness to participate, their attitude to school and also their self-esteem.
