I am a friendly, open and supportive tutor and pay close attention to the individual's creativity and direction. First and foremost I encourage free-form drawing for its mark-making qualities rather than realistic rendering, putting the focus on expression and the physicality of materials. This approach allows the student to discover a freedom of expression and an originality, unshackled from the intimidating demands of 'correct drawing'. I then encourage the use of montage and collage techniques, in combination with more traditional aspects of colour application and mixing of paint. Each student is encouraged to find their own pathway with the guidance of suitable 'artist models' from both historical and contemporary art practice. Adaptation of time honoured techniques and original innovation is encouraged.
I attended Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, graduating in 1989 with a MFA.
I have been a practicing artist and a fine arts tutor in both tertiary and secondary school teaching positions for 16 years. Most recently I have had great success with achieving a 98% pass rate on the NCEA art programs at a prominent secondary school in Hamilton.
