About the lesson
I am a graduate of the University of Cambridge where I read English. Since graduating I have taught at university level and pursued a career as an academic, giving papers at conferences and recently being accepted for publication by Manchester University Press. I am a current postgraduate student at the University of Sheffield and am available for tutoring at all levels. I offer an approach to study that teaches students to develop their ability to read and think independently, focussing on close analysis of texts and considering various methods of approaching a 'reading'. This helps students to think for themselves as readers and to engage with literature and essays independently and creatively. Supportive and warm, I aim to help students come to their own answers and ideas, whilst offering them an understanding of various approaches that will help them position their ideas and arguments. I aim these lessons to be fun and engaging, with individually tailored lessons based on the students interest whether you want to think about feminism in Shakespeare or the influence of the blues on American beat poetry. The point is to help you to think originally, creative and on your own - to get you inspired!

About Emily
Whilst most of my work teaching has been with students at undergraduate level, which I have been engaged in since 2012 on various modules, I am keen to help students at earlier stages including in their school career. I am happy to work with you whether you are someone who struggles to read a poem or someone who is looking towards a university career in English, my aim is to provide a supportive and non-judgemental approach that helps students engage in the subject by working out what inspires them in writing to help them develop. Some of my teaching has expanded beyond literature to teaching of film and performance practice and analysis and I am also happy to engage with students who are keen to study from an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses film, photography and visual arts.
