About the lesson

I recently moved out to Carshalton from central London. I have a music studio for students to take lessons at or I can travel to you. If you are interested in lessons and would like any more information please feel free to get in touch.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I am a trumpet player by profession however I teach all instruments in the brass family.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

Masters in Orchestral Performance First Class - Royal College of Music
BMus(Hons) First Class - Guildhall School of Music and Drama
DipABRSM - Trumpet Performance
ABRSM Grade 8 - Trumpet

- How much do you charge?

My teaching rate is currently £30 per hour. (Half an hour and 45-minute lessons at £15 and £22.50).

- Where do you teach?

I have a teaching studio at my flat on North Street. I prefer to teach from here as I have all the resources available, including a piano and a sound system etc.
I am also happy to travel to you if preferred.

- When are you available?

Throughout the week, both during the day and in the evenings. As a freelance performer my timetable is largely flexible.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and all levels from beginner to grade 8 and beyond!

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

I can teach both the ABRSM and the Trinity/Guildhall syllabuses or we can simply concentrate on developing your playing in which ever direction the student wants to go.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I have a web cam and reliable internet connection however for brass tutoring I'd recommend learning in person! Music theory lessons can easily be conducted via video calls etc.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I'm a young working professional who is regularly performing to the highest standards with some of the most respected orchestras in the UK. I am a committed teacher and hope to provide direction and fun when learning a musical instrument. Playing a brass instrument can be immensely rewarding and I endeavour to make lessons enjoyable and engaging whilst focussing on the needs of each individual student.

About Sam

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have six years of teaching experience which involves teaching students of all ages in group and one-on-one situations. I am the brass tutor at St. Stephen's CofE Primary School in Shephards Bush where I teach both ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall exam boards including music theory grades. I also regularly work with some of the UK's finest orchestras as an educator, visiting schools and working with talented young musicians on performance projects including the London Symphony Orchestra's Discovery projects.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

- Where and with whom did you train?

I grew up in brass bands as a cornet player from the age of eight. At fourteen I moved to study the trumpet at a specialist school, Chetham's School of Music in Manchester where I completed my GCSE's and A-levels and studied with Gareth Small, principal trumpet of the Hallé Orchestra. I then moved to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with Paul Beniston, principal trumpet of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and attained a first class honours degree. Most recently I studied at the Royal College of Music for a Masters in Performance with Alistair Mackie, principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and Alan Thomas, principal trumpet of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a full member of the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) as well as being a member of the Live Music Now! outreach programme bringing live music to those who need it most!

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I am the brass tutor at St. Stephen's Primary School in Shephards Bush where I teach all brass instruments for one day a week. I have also retained some of my full-time students from East London where I have been involved with the London Symphony Orchestra's outreach scheme 'LSO Discovery'. Most of my current students are aged 8-15 and I see them on a weekly or fortnightly basis, mostly for an hour.
