My teaching methods ( depending on instruments) is enjoyment first, knowing the capabilities of the instrument(s) and using your hearing to confirm that what you play is correct. Because of my love for music I try to include playing with others so that you hear the interweaving of harmonies and melodies
I started teaching in 1965 in Auckland and because of knowledge in music I was asked to teach music in the schools I taught at ( I only had Grade 5 exams) but a genuine love for music. I could listen to the radio , pick out new songs on the piano, add chords and away we went
Lessons usually last for 1/2 hour and are charged at @$25 a time -or $40 an hour as they progress.
From 7-10 years I learnt piano and then I stopped until I restarted at age 16 for another year (my mother got tired of me belting out the latest hits without a decent base!!)
At age 18 I attended North Shore Teachers College and could pick out and play the latest tunes from the Hit Parade which led to many Sing-a-longs. In 1971 I attended a music teachers course in Lopdell House Auckland before I became a full time music teacher in Hamilton NZ at Melville Int 1972. Since then I have had my own schools as Principal and taken music every where I've been, An Australian music publishing firm came out to my school (2002) trying to sell me some Primary/Int school music. I said to him "you should be publishing mine". I showed him what I had written and he snaffled them up. took them back to Aussie, and now I'm the author of their top selling publication. I 've sent some more new tunes over recently with which he is delighted.(if you want to check this out get in touch with ( Middle
Now that I'm retired I use my skills to produce more.
I also taught evening guitar classes at the local High School about 12 yrs ago and currently play in a local ukulele group out at Whangarei Heads. The Music teacher at Kamo Int (very local) also invites me to come over and give him a hand voluntarily. Music has been my life and I'm grateful that I can still share my skills and knowledge. I intend to restart taking either guitar, uke, or tune composition instruction again some time soon.
