Political Communications student teaching Media Studies, Political Science, English, and History in New Zealand's Capital - Wellington

Methodology

I approach my courses based on passion and drive - if someone really cares about the subject they're learning, results will always follow. I am able to provide my own exemplars from NCEA work, which have received excellence in the NCEA system. I will ensure I help the people I tutor learn and grow by showing them their potential and providing feedback on their work based on my own experience in the media industry.

Experience

I am a second-year Political Communication student at Victoria University of Wellington and have a keen interest in media and politics. In addition, I have experience as a published journalist for some of New Zealand's biggest media companies, including NewsHub, Stuff, and The Spinoff. I received an excellence endorsement in NCEA levels one, two, and three and am passionate about teaching the next generation of writers.

Work Experience

OCTOBER 2017 -PRESENT

Tearaway Magazine - Student Journalist

This role consists of writing articles and producing news content, and being ‘the voice of New Zealand Youth.’ Throughout my time at Tearaway Magazine, I have written articles about local music, politics, reproductive health issues, LGBTQ+ issues, immigration, and climate change. I was promoted to Community Issues editor in 2019. My work has involved interviewing others as well as creating discussions surrounding important topics regarding young people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

DECEMBER 2017 -AUGUST 2018

The Aaron Dahmen Show - Political Editor

For around a year, I worked as the Political Editor for The Aaron Dahmen Show, producing news and media content regarding New Zealand politics. Throughout my time at TADS, I produced digital media and was able to write ‘snackable’ bite-sized articles on current affairs.

JANUARY 2018 -JANUARY 2020

YMCA Christchurch - Housekeeper

This role has consisted of cleaning the YMCA hostel and facilities, as well as interacting with customers. I worked here for around two years in order to save up money for University. I showed up to work each day on time and with a positive attitude.

SEPTEMBER 2018 -JANUARY 2020

Domino’s Cashmere - In-Store Team Member

Working at Domino’s helped me gain customer service skills and work with a positive attitude. I have been a valuable team member who is reliable at showing up to work on time, and can also be called upon to cover other workers’ shifts. This role helped me develop my communication skills as well as my ability to work as a member of a team.

MARCH 2019 – AUGUST 2019

New Zealand Parliament – Youth MP

Serving as a Youth MP was a great honour and one of my proudest accomplishments, as I have been able to give back to my community and grow my passion for New Zealand politics. Within this role, I engaged with a wide variety of people and debated topics of significance to New Zealand, such as climate change, public education, and healthcare.

JANUARY 2019 – FEBRUARY 2020

RDU 98.5fm - Radio Show Host

My work with RDU 98.5fm engaged my love for local music and my use of Te Reo, as I have been the host of the Te Ahi Top 10, a weekly countdown show of the top 10 alternative kiwi tracks. The show is sponsored by New Zealand On Air, meaning I had a responsibility to be professional on-air. I have used various Te Reo words and phrases on my show, as well as played local Ōtautahi artists for my listeners to discover. In this role, I also helped produce the RDU website.

FEBRUARY 2020 – PRESENT

Salient Magazine – Volunteer Student Journalist

Within this role, I currently produce articles and media content for a student audience at Victoria University. Working in a fast-paced environment and a newsroom has given me relevant experience in the media industry, my work has contributed to Salient Magazine receiving an award for the second best student publication in New Zealand at the Aotearoa Student Press Awards.

FEBRUARY 2020 – OCTOBER 2020

Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand - Telefundraiser

Within this role, I worked as a telefundraiser for the 2020 election campaign, where I called voters and donors and helped increase donations to the Green Party. This work contributed to the Greens’ 2020 election success.

Education

2015 - 2019

Cashmere High School, Christchurch - Excellence endorsement

Throughout my time at Cashmere High School, education and community engagement have been at the heart of my studies. I was a valued member of the Cashmere debating team, as well as an active member in the Humanities Council. In addition, I was a member of our rainbow support group throughout my high school years, which involved leadership and helping younger members of my school cohort. From my studies, I have gained an excellence endorsement in NCEA levels one, two, and three. I have also gained various subject endorsements in subjects including media studies, English, Spanish, classical studies, and history.

2020 - PRESENT
