About Mary

I have a passion for writing and English literature; however, I know that not everyone does. As a former university instructor, I realized that writing can be very intimidating for even college-level students.

Now, as a published writer and someone who's worked with students for 6 years, I've realized that writing and literature are art forms that need to be inspired.

I taught college freshman and sophomores. I remember how many of them were newly out of high school and intimidated by the old texts and essays.

For those students, I didn't tell them to stop crying and copy what I do. That wouldn't have inspired anyone. Instead, I did this: I showed them how to [really] read texts, critically think about them (question what they're reading, analyze, respond), and organize their thoughts. With these skills, the writing flowed, and they had the confidence to bring these skills into other course subjects.

In addition to university instruction, I tutored non-native English students for 5 years. If you're not a native English speaker, I can work with you on your grammar and language aesthetics. I've taught English literacy on even the primary school level. I can work with you on the high, academic level while I help you improve your grammar and written English.

About the lesson

My lessons are split into subsections to keep us on pace and allow flexibility.

We'll start with an overview and announce the goal(s) of the lesson. Depending on the lesson, I've found it's helpful to use a text or existing assignment of the student's. This way, you, as a student, not only receive some guidance for that assignment, but we also can work with a concrete example of writing or comprehension.

Then, we'll cover our subtopics in a way that you'll be applying the lesson to an assignment from your school or university course. In general, I will help you grow your writing skills using the work you need help on— not multiply that work.

As a tutor of 5 years and teacher of 3 years, my experience and my humor definitely sets me apart. Writing can seem intimidating, or even difficult, but I've found ways to make the entire process more efficient and mentally stimulating (not torturous!). For those who are non-native English speakers, I've also been an ESL tutor.

I've taught university and primary school. My speciality for tutoring is high school English and university English. In graduate school, I specialized in medieval studies and creative writing; however, I taught and studied classic and contemporary English and world literary texts.
