About the lesson

I have a great passion for all of my subjects, and I consider it a privilege to share this enthusiasm with students of all ages! I have been teaching in London for 1 year, working with over 30 students in total.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

- Piano
- Composition
- Music Theory (up to A-level/ABRSM theory exams)
- Mathematics (up to GCSE level)
- Japanese (for beginners)

- Tell me about your qualifications.

In 2010, I graduated with Honours from the Royal College of Music with the Bachelor of Music degree. I left Wells Cathedral School in 2006 with A grades for A-levels in Music, Maths, and Further Maths. Whilst I have no formal qualifications in Japanese, I have been studying the language for almost 5 years with the aid of the large Japanese community in College. I have a very thorough understanding of Japanese idioms and grammar.

- How much do you charge?

- £25/h for piano lessons,
- £20/h for maths, music theory, academic music and composition,
- £15/h for beginners Japanese.

I do not charge extra for travel expenses within zones 1 - 3. I charge the same rate for lessons longer or shorter than one hour (e.g. 30 mins piano tuition is £12.50, 30 mins maths tutoring is £10 etc.). I offer consultations to discuss requirements free of charge, but I charge my usual rates for consultation lessons.

- Where do you teach?

I travel to students homes all over London; Northfields, Islington, Camden and Central London, as well as West and South West London.

- When are you available?

Please contact me to arrange a time, my timetable is quite flexible!

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

- Piano and music at all ages and levels.
- Mathematics up to GCSE level.
- Japanese for beginners.

- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.

I am happy to tutor via Skype video calls.

About James

- What kind of experience do you have?

At the end of 2010 I performed my own Piano Concerto with a local chamber orchestra. Whilst at College I performed several recitals, both solo and with other performers, and in May last year I played Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 20 with the Oxford Chamber Orchestra. I have been composing for many years, mostly pieces for solo piano, one of which recently premiered in Japan. Recently I have composed works for piano and choir, piano and cello, as well as piano and string quartet.

I have taught piano to several students in London from as young as 4 years of age, totalling over 30 students. I have extensive experience teaching young beginners, as well as helping an adult student prepare for the ABRSM grade 8 exam. In total I have about 6 years of intermittent experience teaching piano, and at the Royal College of Music I attended seminars on "The Art of Teaching Piano". I applied to Blue Tutors last year, who awarded me the highest possible level on their teaching assessment.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Not yet, but I expect to apply for one in the near future.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Royal College of Music (2006 - 2010): I took piano as principal study under international pianist and teacher Niel Immelman, and took composition lessons with Dr. Jonathan Cole.

Wells Cathedral School (1997 - 2006): I studied piano with RCM professor John Byrne, performed in masterclasses taken by teachers from a number of UK institutions: Vanessa Latarche, Christopher Elton, Ruth Gerald, Mark Ray & Richard McMahon to give some examples. I was taught mathematics by some of the best mathematics teachers in the country, including one of Edexcels Chief Examiners.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a tutor with Blue Tutors.
