Typically, I find it is best to adjust my tutoring style to suit the individual student I am working with.
For example, often with those of my students who find maths difficult, I find my main task is to describe mathematical concepts in ways that are easy to understand and to help reinforce what the student is learning in class. This is also supplemented with lots of exercises, as repetition tends to be the key to helping such students learn a concept.
Then there are some students who aren't actually that bad at maths, they just lack confidence. So I find that for such students, my main job is not so much teaching the student new concepts but building up their confidence that they do already have all the knowledge they need to solve a particular problem.
And for my top students, usually, most of a lesson is spent solving difficult problems, and discussing strategies for approaching particularly difficult questions. Although come exam time, most of my students, regardless of skill level, will be at the stage where they are working on past exam papers, so the main part of the lesson is taken up discussing how to solve past exam questions.
Finally, in general, I am a patient, friendly, and kind maths tutor, who has a genuine love for both studying and teaching mathematics and statistics, and I try to pass on this passion to my students, or at the very least, help them to not hate or be scared of maths!
I have helped hundreds of students of all ages and abilities to improve in maths and statistics. I am thoroughly familiar with all exam systems offered in NZ (NCEA, Scholarship, IB, Cambridge), and can also tutor most university level maths and statistics. I am also able to tutor SAT / GRE maths, tertiary foundation courses, as well as help students who are pursuing research (e.g Masters/Hons) and need help to use and understand SPSS.
In terms of my academic background, I have a BSc majoring in maths and psychology, a first-class honours degree in psychology, and an MSc in Statistics (also with first-class honours) from Auckland University. As a high school student I gained NCEA scholarships in calculus and statistics (as well as French, economics, and physics), was Dux of my high school while still only in yr 12, and twice represented New Zealand at the International Maths Olympiad. I subsequently gained admission (with full funding) to Princeton University where I studied maths for a year, before transferring home to Auckland due to ill health.
Following my Master's degree, I won numerous full PhD scholarships to study statistics at top universities including Cambridge, Columbia, Duke, and Brown, however, I ultimately decided to stay put in NZ and am now working towards a Law degree at Canterbury University.
