About Sally
I am a Nutrition BSc Hons graduate «with a minor in French», from UCD. I have always been passionate about learning languages, I studied French for 10 years throughout secondary school and college and I have always really thrived at it. However, I believe that the curriculum for learning a foreign language in secondary school leaves much to be desired there. I recognise the need for an increased focus on oral learning. Pour maîtriser une langue we must encourage our students to speak it!
In my lessons, I focus on oral proficiency through spoken French and regular revision of grammar and verbs, to sharpen my students' linguistic mechanics. My goal as a teacher, is to meet the students where they are at and help them to achieve their learning goals via whichever mode of learning which suits them best "If a child can't learn the way we teach them maybe we should teach them the way they learn" Ignacio Estrada.
I have studied biology, French and Irish throughout secondary school and achieved H1 grades in each subject at leaving cert level. Obtaining a good grade takes perseverance and diligence, values which are at the core of my teaching approach. Furthermore, I aim to translate my positive learning experiences into engaging and focused lessons for students who are seeking to fulfill their academic potential.

In my lessons, I aim to place particular emphasis on oral pronunciation and fluency. I will give instructions and ask questions in French during the lesson, to give students an ear for the language, and I encourage them to do their best to respond in French also. This will improve their aural and oral abilities and even their ability to recognize certain verbs or phrases (useful for comprehensions).
The structure of my lessons is as follows:
We will start with some informal oral conversation, (I compile a vocabulary list here and throughout the lesson). I assist the student with any topics they are currently struggling with. We progress to the main topic e.g. the imperfect tense, I explain the rules and then we will look at applications of it and try a few exercises, involving applying the new verb tense in sentence structure. I then address any questions the student may have. I conclude the lesson with a review of what we've covered and provide a few homework exercises (don't worry I don't give much homework as I understand the students already have enough to do!). I like to keep my lessons varied by incorporating a mixture of learning methods; reading and comprehension, listening to aural tapes, written and oral expression. This helps to keep the student engaged and strengthens their command of the language.
