About the lesson
I believe that learning should be fun and do my best to tailor my lessons to the interests of each individual student to make them as relevant and enjoyable as I can.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach English to speakers of other languages.
- Tell me about your qualifications.
In 2009 I gained a Pass B in the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults from Stevenson College Edinburgh. I have a degree in French from the University of Edinburgh, where I also studied German until the end of my second year.
- How much do you charge?
My basic rate for general English tutoring is £18 per hour. I am happy to negotiate discounted rates for small group lessons or for block bookings paid in advance.
- Where do you teach?
I teach in students' homes in Edinburgh. I use public transport, so am limited to teaching within the City of Edinburgh. Lessons outside Edinburgh may be possible - contact me and we can discuss. I can also conduct lessons via Skype.
- When are you available?
I am available on Thursday and Friday evenings from 6pm to 9pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 1.30pm to 6pm.
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I am happy to teach English as a Second Language to all levels, whether you just need some conversation practice, or are studying for a qualification.
- Describe your arrangements for online tutoring.
If required, I can give online lessons via Skype.

- What kind of experience do you have?
In addition to the classroom teaching practice for my CELTA qualification (3 hours at Upper Intermediate Level and 3 hours at Pre Intermediate Level), I spent 9 months as a volunteer home tutor as part of Stevenson College Edinburgh's Community Based ESOL programme, teaching weekly one to one lessons in my student's home to help her to improve her confidence in her spoken English and to prepare her for the English test she needed to sit to gain indefinite leave to remain in the UK. I volunteered for 3 terms as a teaching assistant in an ESOL reading and writing workshop, also for Stevenson College Community Based ESOL, helping out at a weekly workshop for people at all levels who wanted to improve their English literacy skills.
I am presently employed by the City of Edinburgh Council, teaching an absolute beginners class on a Saturday morning, having previously led an informal English conversation group and taught a two week summer school, also for the Council.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
If you are looking for great teacher for yourself, your kids, parents, girlfriend or boyfriend stop looking! Hannah is not only full of invention, always prepared and punctual, but also open for suggestion and new ideas. During two weeks holidays my 13 year old daughter and her cousin had 12 2 hour lessons. Hannah was able to motivate and to awaken their interest. I never heard any complain and never had to chase them to revise material for the next meeting. I highly recommend Hannah as English teacher.
