I moved away from schools to reform the rigid teaching format and restraints I was experiencing, which were negatively impacting my students' potential. Therefore, my teaching style is very fluid, and lessons are 100% catered and customised to each individual student.
My lessons are generally based in 3 parts, although this is subject to change reflecting the student's needs and personality:
We get started with warmups! These involve small tasks and practices based on the student's preferred musical area, eg; introduction to DAW begins with loading sounds through virtual instruments, and creating loops; mixing begins with learning about EQ and Compression, and applying this knowledge to a short 3-track tune.
We delve deeper into the area causing us the most strife! Warmup tasks provide a great basis to asses what the student knows and what needs to be worked on.
If there are multiple areas to work through, we pick one specific area and use the following sessions to work on other issues. If the student is finding everything easy-peasy, we move into an area the student is particularly excelling in, and deepen the skills further in that area.
We move where the creativity takes us. This is where things get fluid – if the student is getting into a flow-state with the production exercises in Part 2, we continue down that path and maximise the time we have in deepening the skills within that area. If the student wants to move onto something else, we explore a new area.
With this part of the lesson, the creative path is determined by the student: I've found in previous lessons, sometimes students simply want to explore new music; get feedback on tracks they've made; record songs they have found; or spend time discussing creative concepts dear to them. I'm up for anything and everything creative, and creating a safe space for people to express, explore and excel is my end goal.
Kia ora, my name is Lee. I am a full-time producer and singer-songwriter, published with Universal Music Group (AUS/NZ). I earned my Diploma of Teaching (Secondary), after graduating from a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in Jazz Vocal.
I've been singing, playing and writing music since I was 4, and I belong to several live and recording bands in the Wellington region; ranging from R&B, to Afro-Cuban/Afrobeat, Hip-Hop, Choral and Jazz groups. I am both a jazz and classical vocalist, having completed my ABRSM Grade 8 Classical Singing with Distinction.
I also won the contemporary Māori TV singing contest, 'Homai Te Pakipaki,' in 2014. That was wicked.
I've always been a deep believer in one on one/small group music sessions. During my Diploma, I taught in few high schools around Wellington (often large classes with 30+ students), however, I found these environments to be hectic and unfulfilling for my students due to limited time, resources, and creative exploration.
Since then, I've been tutoring one on one and small groups from my home studio!
My studio and lessons are a safe space for creativity, where musicians can feel comfortable to explore, express, make mistakes, and reach the amazing flow-state which all creatives deserve.
My lessons range from vocal lessons, to songwriting, guitar, music production (Logic Pro X) and piano.
My policy states that session fees for cancellations or no-shows are not waived, no matter the reason. Students can reschedule their lesson anytime during the week before, during, or after their absence.
