I love to make learning music theory fun and strive to make sure every student understands the content thoroughly. After learning where a student is at with their theory practice and how long they have until an exam or test I plan on what is important to teach for each individual and as long as time allows I work on making sure students know everything that is needed for NCEA.
I have been teaching music theory to High School students for the past two years in both NCEA and junior level of High School. I have taught around 10 students and they have all passed their exams well after learning from me.
Personal Statement
I am currently 18 years old and am in my second year at the University of Otago. At University I am studying a Bachelor of Music, minoring in Dance. With this degree I am hoping to become a Secondary School Teacher in Music. I really enjoy working with other people and learning skills and knowledge of each other. I have always been very self- motivated and hardworking which I believe is a has been enhanced by my years of dedication to ballet and learning musical instruments. From my previous work and volunteering experience I have found that many of my personal strengths and traits have been increased.
Previous Work Experience
For the past three years I have been consistently assisting and teaching several different dance classes. This has taught me to be extremely patient and hardworking as well as increasing my organisation skills and time-management skills. I have also had casual jobs tutoring High School students in both Mathematics and Music as well as casual unpaid time working with food and beverage at annual Recitals and Soirees I am tied with. As I am currently working towards my Otago Leadership Award, I have also spent a lot of time volunteering for several different organisations and communities. The most notable communities are St Johns, my church in Timaru, where I assisted with the Sunday School program every week and led the Youth Group every week.. This gives me an opportunity to plan, teach and work on my communication skills with a variety of different people which would help towards my goal to be a teacher. I have also spent notable hours volunteering at my old High School, Craighead Diocesan School, where I have been volunteering in several different ways. This includes my first experience with administration jobs, which I found easy to pick up, as well as including teaching Year 7 and 8’s dance in preparation for their end of year show. This year I am working 1 hour a week at a casual job at the University of Otago until March leading the English Language Support group. This opportunity came to me after volunteering for this organization for 6 months.
Achievements
I have achieved both my NCEA Level 3 at Merit (as well as Level 1, excellence, and 2, merit) and my University Entrance. I am also currently working towards my Bachelor of Music and the Otago Leadership Award. Aside from those achievements I have achieved several different musical and dance achievements that I worked towards while at High School. I also have my full drivers license.
